Help Die Google Contacts!!

Jfoy

Newbie
Ok, when i got my Evo, i linked it with my gmail account, not knowing what it was going to do.

If you use gmail you know, when ever you send an email it adds that address to your contact bar on the left. I have dozens there that are basically garbage, tech supports and what not; and some that i want to keep there cause i used them once and a while but not enough i want them crowding up the contacts on my phone.

When i synced, all the contacts were moved to my phone. I went into "people" and deleted all that i didn't want. They are gone out of "People", but when i try and send a MMS, and hit the little silhouette next to the "To" field, to select who i want to sent it to, all the garbage contacts from gmail are there.

When i use the "People" aka "Favorites" widget from the home screen, if i hit the button with the 3 lines, it goes to my "people" with just who i want there, but if i hit the button with the "+" to add contacts to the widget, all the garbage contacts are there again.

How do i get ride of all these trash contacts?

Sign on your GMail account and go under contact and setup what you want under Android as you can import current CSV and dump it in GMail and it will be saved there so you can sync and go on with your life.

I had the same problem as you did I just made new gmail account just for phone usage as I don't clutter it up totally I have 5 gmail accounts and 2 social gmail accounts. This way its all kept nice and secure but you can do it from 1.

In my gmail contacts I have two categories: "my contacts" and "other contacts". "My contacts" contains those contacts which have full contact info and with which I communicate on a regular basis, while "other contacts" is full of "garbage" email addresses that google collects when you send a one time email. My evo only syncs with "my contacts" and ignores "other contacts". Maybe there is a setting for your phone which could enable syncing with only "my contacts"?

In (desktop) gmail contacts application, I don't have ANY contacts in the "my contacts" group. I created groups and placed contacts in them accordingly. Everything syncs just fine.

For me unchecking "show auto Gmail contacts" resolves that.

Jfoy can also change the settings on his device, so that email addresses are not auto added.

jfoy may need to do some research here on the forum and the sprint andriod site and learn about the device and its capabilities.

I know I spent a good two weeks on this site before buying my EVO. I wrote a list of things I frequently did with my BB and researched the board for answers.

Everything and I mean everything one needs to know about the device, apps, settings or the android store is right here.

How exactly do i do this?

All i have been able to find it going to settings > Accounts and Sync > Google, and un-checking the Sync Contacts option.. but i still have all the crap contacts.

This has to be done on the device by:

  1. Click on PEOPLE
  2. Click VIEW

You will then see various contact list

  • Goggle (the people in your contact list)
  • Show auto Gmail contacts
  • Phone
  • Any other things you have on/running such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.

You can uncheck the "Show auto Gmail contacts".

I would first uncheck the Google contacts, delete all the "auto" contacts. After deleting any unwanted contacts, I would then go back and check the Google contacts and uncheck the"Show auto Gmail contacts" and you should be good to go.

Ok, i go there and the auto gmail contacts already is not checked, i uncheck google contacts as well. When i go into People, like before there is only the contacts that i want of the phone, right now about 13.

But when i use the "Favorites" widget, and hit the "+" button to add someone to the widget, it comes up with all the unwanted contacts still, about 55 of them. Also when i go to messages, and hit "new message" then hit the silhouette next to the "To" field, again i have all the 55 garbage contacts from gmail. I can't delete any of them from either of these locations..

Do these "mystery" contacts show up when you look at contacts on your pc/mac? Have you done a battery pull?

Yes, i have done a battery pull. As to the contacts showing up when i look at my contacts from my Pc. I don't have them on my pc through any sync program or anything, just on gmail, and when i log on to gmail, they are all on the left hand bar like always. I guess they are under the "Chat" heading, just above the "Invite" heading.

When i go to "Contacts" in gmail, all it lists there are the 13 contacts i want to keep and have on my phone. But all 55 or so are still listed in the navigation bar on the left.

Ok, i'm going to do a factory reset... then i will make sure that the "Show Auto Gmail Contacts" in not selected, and then i will link to my gmail account.. I'll let you know how it goes

I think you just answered the question as to why they are showing up on your phone. Gmail contacts sync automatically. In contacts/gmail, on your desktop, delete the unwanted contacts.

In my contacts in gmail, as i already said, it only lists what i want.. I have already deleted from there what i dont want... the rest are not listing in contacts, they are just listed in the navigation bar on the left.

What navigation bar are you talking about?
Are you viewing contacts on your desktop or you device?
