Nandroid backup is basically a snapshot of your phone the way it is now, including all apps, settings, current rom, kernel, etc. Think of it as a complete image. The purpose of a nandroid backup is to have a backup you can always go back to in case you break something. It's also useful for switching between roms. Once you have all your apps installed and settings the way you want on a rom, you can make a nandroid backup, then flash different roms. You can nandroid restore to get back to where you were without having to reinstall everything.
Titanium backup will backup your apps and settings, only. You use it when you want to switch roms, but don't want to reinstall all your apps from the market. It saves you the trouble of having to redownload everything. If you pay for it, and use batch mode, you can have all your apps reinstalled automatically when you switch roms. You can do the same with settings, but be careful batch installing apps or restoring settings when switching between drastically different roms (ie. sense based -> AOSP).
Note that most people use both kinds of backups. They basically have different purposes.
To let you guys know, we have just released "MyBackup Root", which is a FREE download from the Android Market. It is for root phones only, and it will BATCH BACKUP AND RESTORE all applications, including the Data\Settings and Market Links! You are also allowed to schedule backups. All FREE.
We want to support the Root community, so we have made this a Free application, please help us spread the word!
We would also love feedback!
Just wanted to say thank you to you and others just like you that the take the time to explain stuff like this for people like us. I just rooted my phone today and i been on these forums for the past 6 plus hours! This is all so new to me and confusing for the most part but at least i got through the root process. Thanks again for all you guys who help guys like us out!
. I'm happy to help. Trust me, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. All I can say is read, read, read, and read some more. If you're not sure about something, always feel free to ask. You'll get the hang of things quickly. I've had an Android phone since only about early June, and I've only been active in the rooting community for about 2 and half months or so. Granted I had a decent background in UNIX based systems beforehand, but still, you'll learn fast.MyBackup Root will allow as many backups as you want, free.
