Root Difference Between Backups

Nandroid backup is basically a snapshot of your phone the way it is now, including all apps, settings, current rom, kernel, etc. Think of it as a complete image. The purpose of a nandroid backup is to have a backup you can always go back to in case you break something. It's also useful for switching between roms. Once you have all your apps installed and settings the way you want on a rom, you can make a nandroid backup, then flash different roms. You can nandroid restore to get back to where you were without having to reinstall everything.

Titanium backup will backup your apps and settings, only. You use it when you want to switch roms, but don't want to reinstall all your apps from the market. It saves you the trouble of having to redownload everything. If you pay for it, and use batch mode, you can have all your apps reinstalled automatically when you switch roms. You can do the same with settings, but be careful batch installing apps or restoring settings when switching between drastically different roms (ie. sense based -> AOSP).

Note that most people use both kinds of backups. They basically have different purposes.

It's section 3 (Nand backup). It's done from recovery. Since it backs up everything, you can't have anrdoid running at the time. Titanium backup is run from in android since it only backs up apps and settings.

We want to support the Root community, so we have made this a Free application, please help us spread the word!

We would also love feedback!

No problem :). I'm happy to help. Trust me, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. All I can say is read, read, read, and read some more. If you're not sure about something, always feel free to ask. You'll get the hang of things quickly. I've had an Android phone since only about early June, and I've only been active in the rooting community for about 2 and half months or so. Granted I had a decent background in UNIX based systems beforehand, but still, you'll learn fast.

Is there a way to manage all my nandroid/titanium backups? Like what files do I delete from my sd card so I don't fill it with 4+ backups and have no space for anything?

Titanium backup only allows for one backup per item (app, settings, etc.) unless you pay for it. I believe you can manage multiple backups of each item using the pro version from within titanium backup itself.

For nandroid backups, you can find them using any file browser (astro, estrongs, etc.). If you use clockwork, they will be under /sdcard/clockwork. If you use RA, they will be under /sdcard/nandroid. Each backup is in a directory named after the date/time GMT that it was created. You can copy those whole directories to your computer if you want them off your phone. If you want to delete one, just delete the directory for that specific nandroid backup. Just never delete or move individual img files inside the directories.

You're very welcome... Please help keep this application free by spreading the news, and leaving a 5 star review on the Android Market.
