Root Difference between Sense & AOSP (Kernels)?

"Vanilla" roms are considered to be like gingerbread, froyo, cm7?

Not really...

eclair = android 2.1
froyo =android 2.2
gingerbread = android 2.3

These are the goofy way that google names the updates to android, goofy, but see a pattern? Eclair, Froyo Gingerbread, next may be Ice Cream?

CM[insert version here] is a collaboration through CyanogenMod, to get the newest version of android to handsets before it is officially released for them. CM7 is for Gingerbread, android 2.3.

There are iterations of vanilla in all the above. There are sense versions in all but 2.3. Sense is HTC's user interface or ui, as you may see it written. They overlay stock android with what they think is the best way to make it user friendly and capable. Sense is very nice, but it takes extra memory to run because it adds widgets and options that vanilla (google's version of plain android) doesn't have. Soon, there will be sense for 2.3.

Hope that helps...
