Help Difference in Android System v OS?

My wife's S4 is suffering extreme battery drain...up to 12% per hour at times. When looking at her battery usage, the two largest culprits, after "Screen", are "Android System" and "OS".

I am a novice...but is that right? Aren't these the same thing?

To quote from, here...

"Android OS" is actually the low-level kernel, while "Android System" is actually the higher-level OS service layer"

There is no quick fix for your problem as no two phones are identical and running identical apps and usage. It will require a certain amount of reading and observation to determine which app/process is causing the high usage, (typically for me, aroud 10% for Android System and 8% for Android OS over 16 hours).

A couple of tools from the Play Store will help you...

3G Watchdog

and the big boys toy that requires more effort and reading...

Grab a coffee or something stronger, and start reading. ;)

One thing you can try is wiping the cache partition in case there is any rubbish from a previous firmware or app update causing problems. See #1.2 of the Update Problems - Dummies Guide

When I checked on sunday, I left it sitting on an end table in sleep mode for 30 minutes while we had lunch. In that span it had run down from 94 to 88%.

I'm sure you have gone thru all the small steps like, power off and on or battery pull. Also try using the stock Active Apps Manager widget.

It cab be found under add widgets.

It sounds like either there are a lot of apps refreshing constantly. Or there's an app running in the back ground.
