Difference in storage types

I've read the few other posts I can find on this and none are very clear. On the skyrocket we have System Storage, USB Storage and SD Card. I understand the fundamental difference between what each is but I'm wondering what gets automatically saved where? When you download and install an app does it go to System Storage or USB Storage? Thanks for the help.

The reason I want to understand this better is I'm wondering if I need to use an app like Link2SD or not. I don't have a ton of apps but 2GB of system storage (if that's where they're kept) is not much. I'll have to re-format my SD card for Link2SD and would do that before I have too much on it.

Stock, rooted BTW.

Apps go to system storage, app data to usb. 2GB is a LOT of room for apps, many apps can be moved to the sd card if you actually reach the point of maxing out the system storage.
