Different notification sounds for different contacts?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Tasker as a possible solution. Tasker would work for this.

Tasker would work absolutely. Only two things in my opinion I don't like about it:

- Tasker can do so much it is a bit overkill and not too easy to set up (I have not used the new interface from a month or two ago)
- Tasker is a paid solution. LightFlow free edition can definitely do this (and in my opinion is easier to set up for this narrow definition regarding contacts). So, if he tries LightFlow free and hates it, he has lost nothing but time.

But I like your thinking. Maybe he could try Tasker and find uses for the rest of Tasker he never knew about before.

Lol i for one dont have the patience to learn tasker :) much rather pay a dev for a stand alone app.
+1 for light flow, the dev is a brand new guy, very helpful and completely on the ball

If you want an app that is only for text messages you should try: SMS Sounds

I know that you can change a specific contact so that a specific ringtone will go off but is there any app out there that will allow me to have different notification sounds go off for different people? For example, I want a different notification sound to go off when my mom texts me, my girlfriend texts me, and when my dad texts me. I don't want to try handcent or anything like that. I prefer my basic, standard stock messaging app.

Any help would be highly appreciative.

Thanks.

Following up on the Tasker theme. It may not be for everyone. For some (like me) it's almost the best thing since sliced bread.

Here is what I have in Tasker. It says the name of the SMS sender as long as they are in my contacts.

It is really easyt: 2 conditions in the profile (one for received text, one to check the time so it doens't talk in the middle of the night). The resulting task is a wait action (seems to work better) and then say the sender's name using the built in TTS engine. Below is the description exported from Tasker. It looks more complicated than it really is because it specifies all the options for each action... most are just defaults.

Profile
Event: Received Text [ Type:Any Sender:* Content:* ]
Time: From 04:59 Till 23:59
Enter Task: Say SMS Sender (473)
A1: Wait [ MS:999 Seconds:0 Minutes:0 Hours:0 Days:0 ]
<"continue after error" ON>
A2: Say [ Text:%SMSRN Engine:Voice:com.ivona.tts:eng-GBR Stream:5 Pitch:6 Speed:5 Respect Audio Focus:Off Network:Off Continue Task Immediately:Off Continue Task After Error:On ]

It works fine as long as the sender is in your contacts. Although you may have to spell a few of your contact's name phonetically in contacts to help it pronounce them correctly.

Cool. Thanks. I may look into that.

I'm using handcent and lightflow. Apparently Lightflow thru Handcent can't support different colors for differant contacts, so oh well.

Otherwise lightflow is great. Except I don't see Facebook under my notifications choices. I've got K-9 mail there, which I also downloaded, SMS, missed calls, so on. But nowhere does Facebook or Facebook messenger appear, and thus there's no lights turning on when I get a message.

Any ideas how to address this?

Facebook and Messenger are available only on the premium version of Lightflow

Ah, so that's it. Thanks! Googled this but couldn't find anything.

Is the paid version only 2.49 forever, or is that a recurring charge? What other benefits besides Facebook notifications might one get with paid version?

There's an option in there that allows you to see all the other apps that. I think it's more notifications or something. Been a while since I use Lightflow. It's a one time charge.
