Disable 3G???

The problem is background processes. When you go off wifi it automatically kicks over to 3g. You could use flight mode but that turns off your cell Service as well. So no phone calls. Only other suggestion is a task manager. Kill any process that could use data.

Your right. It should be easier.

To add to what Rob is saying, i cant find any effective application to choke off and automatically manage the plethora of apps running in the background. I have been looking for a "best-in-class" download to help with manging my tasks to save on background data use and battery life. Can someone recommend the best task killer out there which will not mess up my Captivate?

I have read what folks are saying in other forums and they cautioned against using task killers. But, without this, backgroup apps soak up your memory and slows down one's Captivate.

Because that task is left to Android itself. Android manages (and kills) apps in the background as needed.

Android.

Background apps do not "soak up your memory". If you get low on memory and need it for a new app, Android has a whole built-in procedure for deciding what to kill to free up and manage memory. Interfering with that can cause problems.

I refer to you the Captivate FAQ for more-detailed information and further reading:

I use both Advanced Task Killer and Automatic Task Killer. I'm not worried about memory but rather use of MBs. I have the limited plan so I don't want apps using 3G without my knowledge or approval.

At night before I go to bed I'll kill all running apps except Automatic Task Killer. In the morning I wake up and find YouTube and a couple of others are running. What YouTube is doing while I'm sleeping I have no clue. So Automatic Task Killer is not perfect.

I don't kill processes but haven't heard about any problems caused by task killers. What are they?

Yes, this should be simpler. My blackberry, from not too long ago, had the option for 2G(EDGE)/3G or 2G only. But it was still a blackberry...

I tried many of the suggestions, but could not get one that worked well enough that I could give the phone to my kids, and not worry the data usage would surprise me because they powered it off, used airplane mode or whatever reset the 3g connection.
Finally, I noticed the APN uses wireless.cingular.com, so I just edited my /etc/hosts file, and added an entry to route wireless.cingular.com to 127.0.0.1 (local to the phone).

So far, that seems to work well, anyone see problems with that approach?
