Disable automatic updating

In my quest to free up resources I noticed in settings that auto updating of programs like twitter facebook and google were enabled.I disabled the twitter and facebook but google said it could affect system programs. I don't use google for anything that I know of. Can I disable this safely? Will it help battery resources?

I've disabled auto syncing of google. I went to my newly created gmail and just set it to forward to one of my existing emails. I haven't seen any adverse effects. And yes, it will slightly help battery resources. Anytime you stop something from running or make it run less frequently, it'll help battery life a little. Battery life is a big deal to me, so all my settings cater to it.
