Help Disable default message notifications?

Is there a way to do this because I keep getting two notifications per message due to using a third party messaging client?

open the stock messaging app, hit the three dots in the bottom right corner for settings, uncheck the boxes for auto-retrieve and notifications.

On a related note. How do I get the default messaging box to not pop up every time I get a message? I have everything unchecked in the default messenger and am using handcent instead of the default.
