If I understand your question, you don't want your signal to drop back to 2G when 3G, 4G and 4GLTE are not available, which happens from time to time. You'd then be reliant on wifi, or you'd just have no data signal from your carrier at all. There are apps which can switch you back and forth, if all signals are available: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.curvefish.widgets.network2g3gonoff&hl=en is one for 2G and 3G. Searching in Play Store yields many such apps, some paid and some free.
