Disabling "no signal" alert

Hi all,

I understand some (but not all) Android users get an annoying audio notification whenever their phone loses signal and that it's annoying. We're looking at a solution to this. But first I need to understand the problem:

1) Has this problem been resolved through newer versions of Android which perhaps allow you to shut this sound off?
2) Does anyone know if this problem is isolated to particular devices or carriers?

Any insight will be appreciated. Cheers!

The only way ive ever seen to MAKE that happen (sound when signal drops) is using an app like light flow tbh mate. If you cant find a setting to turn it off and youre rooted you could go into system media audio and rename the .ogg file for that tone to disable it

I'm rooted and i still can't disable the audio alert, which also cuts out the music playback. only solution is airplane mode. to be fair, i haven't even heard an alert until recently on my new CDMA Samsung. last time i remember that little annoyance was on an old ancient Kyocera pre-paid Verizon FREEUP phone. but that phone allowed you to disable it. it's not even an option, not even in a custom ROM, on my phone. i think i could possibly find it in /audio/media and delete it and see....even if i got the phone in silent mode or if i deleted the file, the music still cuts out for the duration of the alert, but i do not hear it.

FYI I searched /system/media/audio and all sub folders but the file for this notification is somewhere else or buried far deeper into the ROM than I expected. All searches on Google seem to say to go into settings and mobile network options and untick the "service tone/loss of signal alert" but that option doesn't exist in my phone, all I have is an option to disable 3g data.

Was hoping log cat would display the filename and location whenever it would make the alert but all it showed was some entries regarding "DefaultPhoneNotifier" and the service calling the alert was known as "DMapp"

Have u asked around in the rooters forum for your device bro? Maybe its more device/rom specific

From my looking around different threads on different forums there seems to be the same end result for those lacking the setting to disable the tone. Custom ROMs still have it, no third party tools can disable it, even cyanogenmod can't enable the setting, it's not in the kernel or build.prop, and it isn't in /system/media with the the rest of the system alerts/alarms. I'll keep everyone posted. So far the tone exists only on various CDMA, but not gsm phones. My ancient kyocera was CDMA also.

Thanks for the input, guys. The reason I was asking is to see if it makes sense to create an app that will turn off that sound. From all that I've read, it doesn't look like this issue is straightforward or standard enough for that. I see that it varies across devices and probably carriers as well. Probably not worth the effort to figure out a global solution.

Thanks again.

If there were some means to add that little shortcut in mobile network settings to disable the blasted thing, but my phone is one of the odd few without that option. All I can do is either use airplane mode or silent mode (the latter stops the notification some but the pause still happens if playing music)
