Help Disabling stock SMS app?

I've downloaded HandcentSMS because it works quicker than the stock SMS app, and it's cooler looking with the bubbles and whatnot. But now when I get a message, and I get two notifications, one from each of the messaging apps.

How do I disable the stock messaging app?
I have turned off "auto-retrieve" option in that app, but that hasn't done anything.

I also tried disabling all options in the original app but it didn't work.the text just pilled up in there taking up precious space. i had to root my phone and download root uninstaller and uninstall the original sms app.

I'm reasonably sure somebody out there knows of a better way. But I disabled everything that dealt with receiveing or notification, in the app itself. also go into the app manager. Menu> settings> applications> manage applications> pick the all tab, should be able to find the messenger in there. Find the native messages app and tick off the use as default option. Next time you need to use handcent. You should get a choice on which mesanger you want as default. Tick the use as default button and click on handcent. That should take care of it. Worked for me at least. Was making me crazy getting double notifications. As to whether the messages pile up, probably so. After getting it to shut up I didn't stress the issue.

I will try that again. I did find it in the settings>>applications section, but I didn't see a checkbox for use as default. But I'll look again.

As far as texts piling up, I would think that when the phone recieves a text, it just recieves it once, and however many message apps you have, they all just use the same SMS file, and organize them differently. But I could be wrong.

edit: just to possibly prove this, I deleted a message in the stock messaging app, and it disappeared in HandcentSMS also. So I think there is only one copy of SMS files on the phone, that multiple apps can access.

So I guess the problem I have is not files stacking up, but just annoying double-notifications.

I unchecked all notifications boxes in the default message app. Well see if that helps.

I also found the app in running applications, I did a force stop, and then cleared defaults.

That is correct - the phone stores messages in a single database, and the stock messaging app and handcent (and chomp) are just clients accessing the database.

I am fairly certain that disabling notifications in the stock app will fix this problem. It did for me when I ran Handcent for a while last summer. You may want to restart the phone just to make sure that the setting has taken.

So is the Messaging app idle if I don't open it up, or is it using resources in the background?

I think that there is a core Android service that responds to messages sent to the phone, and that takes care of sending notifications to the apps that are set to receive them. I am not using Handcent and messaging is not running in the background on my phone right now.

Ok, thanks for the info.

I recieved a new text a few minutes ago, and it only gave the Handcent notification, not the other one, so I think I'm good now.
