Root Disabling system updates (important warning added)

Update:
After 2 days, I found that the update had downloaded again and the notification had come back. So unfortunately it appears that the method that I described below does not work. I'm leaving it here in case it might help someone figure out a real solution.

For now the only thing that is confirmed to work is disabling the notifications from Google Play Services as described at the bottom of this post.

Update 2:
Please see the warning in post #4 before deleting the update file from your phone!

----- original post follows -----

I'm running donjuro's "ZV4 updated stock ROM". This past week I started getting system update notifications for ZV5.

I was able to disable the notifications with this process.

1) Copy fotakill.apk into /system/app as discussed here:
http://androidforums.com/threads/yes-fotakill-does-work-but-you-have-to-do-it-right.877024/

2) Rename /system/app/LFOTA.apk to LGFOTA.bak

3) Delete update file from /cache. For ZV5 the file should be named something like "LS740ZV4_08-LS740ZV5_07_update.zip" and should be about 200MB.

4) Go into System Settings, Apps, All. Select Google Play Services. Select Clear Cache. Select Manage Space. Scroll to bottom and select Clear All Data.

5) Reboot phone

You need a root file manager for steps 1-3. There are many choices in the play store. This one is relatively small and simple:

A quicker method for hiding the notification is to just uncheck Show Notifications for Google Play Services in the app manager. This method won't prevent the update from being downloaded to your phone though.

Thanks for the info.
I dont want to mess with the phone too much so i juat disabled its notifications.

I deleted the update zip and disabled notifications from Google play services. It hasn't bothered me, or even redownloaded the update since.

CAUTION!!! When the update downloads to your phone, it may use mobile data! If you delete the update file from /cache, it will probably just get downloaded again, possibly using even more mobile data. Until someone finds a way to stop the update from downloading, I do not recommend deleting the update file.

I'm on the $35 Sprint plan which only includes 1GB of mobile data. I deleted the update file twice, and it has downloaded again, so now it has downloaded 3 times. Today my mobile data stopped working, so I started poking around. Looking at the mobile data usage in the phone settings, it appears that the download used mobile data all 3 times! Google Play Services consumed 627MB of mobile data over the last 1.5 weeks. Now it appears that all my data is used up, and my plan doesn't renew for 2.5 more weeks.

Argh, I'm really mad right now! Why don't they restrict the download to wifi, or else excluded it from the mobile data limit. I have to wait until business hours tomorrow to call them to see if there's anything they can do.

You've been warned. Please don't repeat my mistake.

It downloads automatically?

There's a Xposed module for blocking notifications I can't remember the name.

Also try using boot manager to prevent the app from starting ?

It comes from Google play services. Stop it and you pretty much cripple the phone. What I did was disable notifications, then deleted the update zip. Hasn't redownloaded since.

Update: I called Sprint and they were kind enough to give me some more data to make up for the data that was burned by the system update.

I did some more googling and haven't had any luck finding a way to stop the download. I did see a comment by someone saying that they didn't think fotakill.apk worked on kitkat, so that may be why my original procedure didn't work. I had used it successfully in the past on jellybean.
