disadvantages of not having gmail?

I get my Eris today and am planing on using the sticky in the forum to sync my outlook with the phone. Does anyone here not have a gmail account at all? I am wondering what is the disadvantage to not having/using gmail with the phone. I would rather stick with my pop3 account, though I guess I can set up a gmail account as well if needed. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

i think you have to have a gmail acct, you can turn off notifications once it is set though.

i dont use gmail, so i just added it to me google webmaster acct so i could activate the phone.

If your not going to use the gmail account, make sure you turn off the auto-sync. Menu > Settings > Data synchronization > Google ... Un-check Auto-sync.
