Disapointing Camera?

Hi, the HD has a 5MP camera? Same as the Desire? I use Vignette but it doesn't reduce the image size - have you checked the settings? You can choose different MP settings as well as quality.
Vignette is a superb camera app, I love it! Retro and Polaroid are my most used settings

I have Vignette on my Desire (5MP) and Vignette set it to 3MP (ok, suggest it
).On my Desire HD I have only the stock camera with 8MP.
So you are right about the MPs
EDIT: found the suggestion on Vignette in Desire:

I've been using both the native app and Vignette since I have had the phone. Yes the ideal resolution for Vignette is 3.1 mp. But like the OP mentions in low light the camera is next to useless.
Having to move your hand to touch the screen to take a pic instantly moves the camera and hence produces a blurred image. Many times it won't even focus lock in low light.
For low light pics, the best thing i've tried it to use the native app and set the White balance to anything but Auto. Set the ISO to anything but Auto. When I say anything I mean set it to what the surrendings dictate. Try also turning the expose to +1 and sharpness down to -1, (this I got from another forum).
With a bit of practice and playing with the settings you can get half decent pics.
I think it's a hardware issue and no amount of software will sort out this LQ camera. It may be an 8mp camera but the CCD/sensor is below par.

There is no level of detail in the pictures and it makes the colouring of shots look like they've been 'water-coloured' and over 'sharpened'.
I'm still experimenting with the camera settings but I don't think it's going to make much difference.
The (apparent) 8 mega pixels camera was a major selling point for me buying the DHD and it's been a very disappointing let down

Not to be a douche but I did say early on in this forum the 8MP camera isn't as good as an 5MP of iPhone 4 or Galaxy S.
The lens is the same size if not smaller than a 5MP lens anyway, so what did you expect...

Your comment sounds very confident and authoritative but it has me perplexed. I'd be grateful if you could share your expertise with us...
Do you consider 8 megapixel sensors to always be worse than 5 megapixel ones? If so, inferior in what way? What is the scientific basis for this?
What do you mean by the size of the lens? Physical size maybe? Maximum aperture? Focal length? Please explain why, and how, this size needs to be matched to the camera sensor resolution?

Camera seems pretty good to me, Better than my old LG Renoir. Pics look great on the phone and even when printed onto 6x4 photo paper, Not as good as my old Satio but the less said about that the better, Symbian = FAIL

wow, thanks for this. saved a lot of questions in my head, got a lot of good shots after using most of the guides there. so loving this phone, its so cool!
There is a clear issue with the lens. The alignment is slightly out, causing image blur on either the left hand or right side of the image. Its sooooo irritating!! This is my second handset, hoping that it was just a faulty handset, unfortunately my second handset suffered the same fate!!
Ditto. I hearted my N82's camera (little else on the hardy little warrior) and thought that I would once more have a phone (after a string of pretenders) that would capture my world as well as it did.
Still, It's a pretty neat bit of kit.

I've not used my camera much for actual picture taking, but in combination with the Cam Scanner app its bloody brilliant.
Take a picture of a document and it looks like its been scanned it, great quality too. Used it at work the other day to take a picture of a phone bill to help a colleague with an application they were making.

The camera when configured properly is brilliant, dont make threads like this cos u havent got a clue. Use the options on the camera. Try different settings, turn off the auto focus unless your in good light. Hit up Google but don't brand an 8 MP camera crap cos u dint know how to use it.

All we're saying is that without doubt, the camera or its software is not up to scratch. It should be as easy as pointing and shooting. After all, everything else this phone does that. My HTC makes things easier, smoother and better. It's - on the whole - awesome.
But, I have so many amazing photos and memories from my 5mp N82. Seriously, that phone was brilliant. If my phone could do it two years ago ... Don't you think I should be able to get it done now with the top HTC model ...

I totally agree with you . The camera is very dissapointing , especially compared to the Nokias . My 8mp N86's camera is fantastic , point , shoot , quality pictured everytime , absolutely no need to mess about with any settings , just as a phone camera should be . Like ya say , " who wants to mess around changing settings for twenty seconds " the moment you want to capture will be gone .

OK - an important update. At least I think so.
So, it's not actually the camera, but it appears to be the HTC camera app that sucks the big one - simple.
I finally realised this after missing some great shots while skiing, where my colleague got brilliant photos using a 5 mg older motorola. He even took a couple of shots with my HTC and the result was the same. Blurred crapola!
I looked at 360 and Vingette apps as possible camera software solutions. Vignette may be better with its paid version but its free version turns the camera into a three megapixel camera. That in my opinion is like putting a speed restriction device into a ferrari and setting it at 40 km/hr.
I am using 360 and am much happier, especially with its stabilization settings - It is free too. I am starting to get much better quality shots with the HTC desire HD.
Also - using swypepad. Oh my god! Awesome to be able to get into the camera with just one movement from most screens. So handy - have my 360, cam recorder, torch, and other things that need quick access all with just one swype.
As for Camscanner (I'm sure someone mentioned it earlier), my work scanner was broken the other day and I used it instead. I didn't get much luck at first as I was trying to do too much with it and thought it was crapola too until it automatically resized and trimmed my document. Brilliant.
I still think I might pay for Vignette. Depends on whether my next outing is a photographic success or not.
