Disappointed with Verizon and Rezound

Malcaver49

Newbie
I just got off the phone with a Verizon tier 2 rep. I have had my 4th Rezound fail due to failed proximity sensors. The phones screen with not come back on when taking the phone away from your ear during a phone call. A failed proximity sensor makes it all but impossible to make menu selections on automated answering systems.

To make a long story short, I told the rep I would not except another Rezound but insisted on another type of replacement phone. They offered me an HTC Droid Incredible 4g. However, I was told that the phone would not come with a battery or a back. Those would have to be purchased to the tune of $75 + tax + $14.95 for shipping. The refused to use the free 2nd day shipping on, what they call, "accessories". Since when is a battery and back for a phone considered an accessory?

I am sincerely running out of patience and options. Any ideas from all of you?

I have a laptop and a tablet that I use via WiFi at home. Since the phone seems redundant, I am thinking about going back to a basic phone just to make calls and texts and use my tablet and laptop for everything else. Sound reasonable?

I'm sorry and somewhat surprised to hear they refused to take care of you. I suspect they have been abused to such an extent that they now turn a deaf ear to valuable customers.

If you don't need mobile browsing and aren't into all day social connections, I would think a tab and laptop would more than fill the bill. I'm so accustomed to being accessible every waking hour.. be it phone, text, email, this forum.. etc, a basic phone would just not fill my needs/desires. Good luck on whatever you decide to do.

I agree with the above. On these forums I see too often people that are willing to do something deceptive, and blatantly unethical, to their advantage, like damaging the phone themselves and calling for a replacement claiming that it broke on its own.

Unfortunately, OP's situation is not unique and it really troubles me. I don't understand how a service-dedicated company could be complacent with hassling a customer with 4 defective replacement phones.

I'm strongly considering leaving Verizon at the end of my contract just because of costs, but this does sound fishy. I can't believe they wouldn't want to keep you on and take care of you as Olbriar said.
One thing to keep in mind (if it applies to you), if you currently have unlimited data and drop all smartphones from your plan, I believe you lose it forever.

I do have unlimited data and yes, I would lose it forever. However, if I went back to a basic phone, used my tablet and laptop for data, a sales rep at a Verizon store told me my bill would be cut by about $32.00. Something to think about. I do enjoy having a smartphone, but do I really need a smartphone? Maybe not. Going to think about until early next week.

i have had pretty decent luck with verizon over the years on my phones. But last year my daughter had a phone...i forget what it was..but it was a motorola phone and it was a total piece of crap. She bought it on a two year contract and almost from day one it had problems freezing and had to be rebooted about every 5th text message. Well verizon replaced the phone for her 4 times...with no luck at all getting her a phone that worked.

I just remember being on the phone wit them for over an hour one time trying to get them to switch her to a different phone. It was brutal....so i can empathize with the OP. And i hope it gets resolved.

Just take a replacement. I guess I got lucky but my replacement has been flawless. I've generally had good service from Verizon as long as I'm polite. I wouldn't really expect them to give me a newer phone and especially wouldn't expect them to throw in a battery and cover since that's not typically how they work. It's not that much hassle to ask for another replacement until they get it right.

I've read that metro now has the s3, I've never considered metro before but if they keep getting higher end devices, I may try them out. The prices are less than half of what I pay for the same thing.

I couldn't go back to a basic phone, even if I could, they are phasing them out quickly.

I find it very fishy that 4 proximity sensors would go bad on 4 different phones. Impossible? No. Extremely unlikely? Yes. If you really do have proximity problems with every replacement then my guess is that it is somehow related to a app or something specific that you have downloaded otherwise I would call this a classic case of me want new phone but dont have upgrade yet. I have a rezound and have never had a proximity sensor problem yet I would assume that if you were given my phone as a replacement the proximity sensor would somehow start acting up. What are the odds that you honesty get ANOTHER bad rezound? Either take another rezound or pay for the battery on a new phone. Just my $.02

I agree with you except for fact that on this particular Rezound I have not downloaded or installed one single app. It is completely as it was the day I received it from Verizon as a replacement two months ago. I only use the apps that come standard on the handset. I did this just to see if it could possibly be an application. Any explanation for that? P.S. I prefer the Rezound over any other handset currently available.

Until I just received my replacement, 100% of the 1 rezounds I have owned had a failed proximity sensor. I could have written the same problem as per OP.

My Rezound proximity sensor was failing due to my zagg screen protector. I cut notch at the top of the left side of the "V" and it then worked fine. I assume that even a Verizon Tier 1 would ask about a screen protector, though.

My proximity sensor started acting up recently too. Found a app Rezound Proximity that addressed the issue by recalibrate the sensor value, but you need to be rooted.

I think that's odd that you guys have failed proximity sensors. Maybe there are a number of bad batches of Rezound's floating around. I have had my phone since the end of Dec 2011 and haven't had any real problems with it. I think there was one time where it was messing up or something, but other than that it works good. It has a slight delay on it as it isn't lightning fast, but it still works good.

I just had another Rezound get replaced (Prox. Sensor this time), and I too was offered the Incredible 4G. I turned them dowm, because a quick look at the specs shows it to be an inferior phone, and I'm not into experimenting right now.

It's not fishy. My daughter has a Rezound and has had it replaced 5 times for the very same reason. Now my Rezound is doing the same thing. I have been doing research and a lot of people have this problem. I called HTC because my warranty is up. They want to charge anywhere from $90 to $230 to fix the proximity sensor. I've had my Rezound since they first came out, but just started having this problem. I have had it replaced twice for other reasons.

My proximity sensor use to go out on my rezound too. But I was always able to fix it by using a duster can of air and blowing at the ear speaker. Dust accumulates there and often causes the sensor to malfunction. Blow especially at the right corner. But its best to blow the whole ear piece with the can of air. I had to do this about every few months.
