Hi Guys,

I have recently been struggling with internal storage and have moved everything possible to SD, cleared cache etc - I have scanned the phone with DiskUsage and it shows the total memory (147.6MB)

Apps : 65.1 MB
System Data : 70.2MB
Free Space : 12MB free.

The question I have is about the System Data - is it normal for System Data to take up 70MB of the phones internal memory? It's hogging half the phone's memory can it be reduced?

Android : 2.2.2
Network: O2 Uk
Non-root

DiskUsage doesn't explicitly show the cache of every app, these caches are part of the system data ... and not a very small part.

The app Quick App Manager shows the cache of every app in an overview, it's very helpful :)

To clear the trash can folders of the email apps might also help to get a little more space.

It's hard to tell what this app calls "system data", but I suspect that it includes all data from "system apps", i.e. the apps that are part of the ROM. So that includes contacts, any built-in social networking apps, stock browser, etc. It also includes app caches (whether system or user apps), which can easily be 10s of MB in size if you do a lot of browsing.

Try going into the "manage applications" menu and viewing all apps (not just downloaded) sorted by size, and see which the big users are. You may find that clearing caches on some of these helps (from the menu, though I think some cache cleaning apps on the market can work without root). You may also find that some are using unreasonable amounts of data (contacts storage can go large if you've many duplicate contacts stored there, which the app itself usually hides from you).

Edit: Ah, Harry beat me to it! :)

Thanks Harry, that's a useful App - I have just tried it out though it shows me that I have nearly all caches clean. I doubt I'll be able to gain much without rooting to get rid of HTC apps I don't use.
