Root Display Dead...need help w/root related stuff

jdsingle

Android Expert
My display is dead, will not work no matter what I try. The phone will boot up but no display. Went to Verizon and a new one is being sent to me.

The phone was rooted using revolutionary, and SkyRaider Zeus was installed. We did not install any separate kernels and the display worked for a long time until it died so I really don't think it was caused by software. [dontinfoilhate]Nonetheless, I want to get back to s-on and flash a stock RUU to make myself feel a little better. Whether this is completely necessary or not is irrelevant for me. I'm doing it just so I feel better. Anyways, I have found how to return to stock after revolutionary root I can follow this guide easily no problem.

I run into problems on this portion...restore stock rooted

I can't see the display so this isn't something I can do with just the phone. I haven't used ADB in ages. Is there anyone that can just browse through these links to make sure #1 I have all my info down correctly, and #2, that I can do the second portion with ADB. If that does work, does someone know the commands for allowing me to flash a RUU (is this even possible?) to the phone? If so, please post.

If you are able to help me I am more than happy to send some beer money. I really appreciate any help that can be provided.

All i did was flash this file here and it wiped my phone all root and put it back s-on and stock recovery. It's the file that would have been the OTA but wasn't released (i don't think)

New HTC Thunderbolt 2.11.605.5 RUU Released, Fixes Major Bugs From the Last Update – Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

The on screen instructions says do you want to flash the pg05img volume up for yes volume down for no.

I'd save give it about 30sec to get to the bootloader then read the pg05img and ask you what you want to do. Then hit volume up and just let it sit and do it's thing for 5-10mins. (Forgot how long it took, it took a while)

Thanks for the post! I will look into that. Only one issue, since I can't see my phone, I can get to HBOOT (Volume Down + Power Button), but I don't know what to click and press from there. Will this auto update and that's where you are saying that if I wait a minute or two I should be able to press that combination and be good to go?

Anyway for me to push it using ADB so I know that it get's installed? The only other way I will know it is installed is if I boot up the phone and see if the airplane noise from SR Zeus is gone. Also, is there anyway in ADB to verify that it is S-On?

Flashing an ruu file after running revolutionary will not change your hboot, it will still be s-off.

I'm not sure is it will be possible to unroot with no display

Thanks for the info. The display not working does not affect the ability to unroot the phone. it just makes the process more difficult. I either need someone to give me step by step button information to get into recovery to flash an RUU or something along those lines

I think I can put you together something to do everything in fastboot on your pc. It will later on this evening :)

That is true you should be able to unroot but you won't be able to see anything you are doing. have you checked out Scotty's guide located at http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/418539-thunderbolt-root-unroot-thread.html ?

It has the instructions and the ADB commands it is just you will not get any visual feedback and I would think the risk to potentially brick the bolt would be increased

One of the guides I posted above has the ADB commands to get me through the first part like Scotty's. The second part which is the difficult part doesn't have those. But, thanks for the info as I will most likely use his over the other one.

Whatever you do... Don't flash any other ruus or or pg05img files.

I have no plans on touching the phone until I hear from you haha.

Yeah I saw one of them gave credit to Scotty. I am not all that good with ADB and try to avoid putting a wire from my phone to my CPU as much as I can. I figured Scotty would be able to help you (plus if you put his name in a post he magically comes to that thread ;) :p)

whaaaa

:D

im home now, give me a lil while to run thru it on my phone and make sure it will work like i think it will. i dont want to screw it up and find out after that fact that youll need to enable something or do something on the screen ;)

ok,heres what you need to do:

download these 2 .zip files(from the original root/unroot thread):

1)PG05IMG_2.11.605.5_no_hboot.zip
md5: b7ebb0b208f704c84f1224de16e61a8e

2)PG05IMG_2.11.605.5_hboot_ONLY
md5: e6df3ae14523508868dc811ecc5d4b07

then follow these directions(also from the original root/unroot thread):
Setting up adb and removing the permanent hboot if youve never used adb before
1)if you no longer have the htc drivers that you installed when rooting with revolutionary, download them again from here on revolutionarys website.
2)next download this file to somewhere convenient that youll be able to find it,like your desktop,or a "downloads" folder. it contains the old eng 1.40.2000 s-off hboot, and the bare minumum tools to install it.
3)the following directions were using windows 7 and chrome browser. other OS may be slightly different-the end result is you want unzipped, inside tbolt folder to be on the root of your C: drive.
-find the tbolt.zipdownload
-click on tbolt.zip download and open it.
-inside tbolt.zip, there is a folder labled tbolt. drag it to the root of C:. inside tbolt is the unpermanent hboot and some adb tools.

3a) once you have the "tbolt" folder on the root of your c/ drive, drag the entire PG05IMG_2.11.605.5_no_hboot.zip into it the tbolt folder, along with the tools and files that are allready there. dont unzip it.

3b) open the PG05IMG_2.11.605.5_hboot_ONLY .zip file. if you have to,use 7 zip or the equivalent to extract it. inside there is an image: "hboot_7630_1.05.0000_110719.nb0" youll want to drag and drop it,or copy and paste it, into the tbolt folder, along with PG05blah blah, and all the tools.

4) charge your Thunderbolt to 100%
5)click on then "start" bubble in the lower left corner of your screen. type "command" in the search window and hit enter. this will open a small black command window.
6)enter the following command(by typing or copy/paste):
Code:
cd c:\tbolt
you should see your promt in the window change to: c:\tbolt>
7)enter the follwing command:

Code:
adb devices

assuming your custom rom has usb debugging disabled by default(why i didnt want you flashing something else) then you should see your serial number.

enter the commands,1 at a time:
8)
Code:
md5sums PG05IMG_2.11.605.5_no_hboot.zip
it may take a minute, but it should output b7ebb0b208f704c84f1224de16e61a8e

9)
Code:
md5sums hboot_7630_1.05.0000_110719.nb0
output should be
e1e330356ec5c889a92be1b5ef6c853d

10)
Code:
adb reboot bootloader

11)
Code:
fastboot devices
should output serial number

12)
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU

13)
Code:
fastboot devices
should output serial number. if not, youll have to pull the battery, power on into hboot via power/vol down. wait a couple minutes. press power to select fastboot. i know this will be nerveracking cause you cant see the screen  do fastboot devices again. then go back to the 12) fastboot oem rebootRUU step, and continue. you need to get your serial number at step 13 before you can continue. otherwise youll just get a "<waiting for device>" error.

14)once youve gotten your serial number at step 13,flash the pg05 no hboot file with this command:
Code:
fastboot flash zip PG05IMG_2.11.605.5_no_hboot.zip

remember, for it to work, its important that PG05IMG_2.11.605.5_no_hboot.zip be in the tbolt folder along with adb, fastboot, etc.

it will do a bunch of stuff. when its done, youll see:
"OKAY [213.940s]
finished. total time: 287.032s"

15)then:
Code:
fastboot devices
assuming you see a serial number, then:

16)then:
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader

17)unlock revolutionary hboot:
Code:
fastboot oem mw 8d08ac54 1 31302E30

18)write 1.05.0000 hboot(md5 above matched,right? :))
Code:
fastboot flash hboot hboot_7630_1.05.0000_110719.nb0

19)then:
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader

20)then:
Code:
fastboot reboot

your phone should now be completely stock. if you could see it :)

and heres what you should see on the PC(red are my inputs):

ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! Thank you so much, phone is getting sent back today. Hopefully we don't hear back from VZ about anything. Thank you so much Scotty, everything worked very smoothly.
