Display not 5 inches.

The phone is advertised as having a 5 inch display but the viewable area is less do to the function buttons at the bottom being a part of the screen. Also as noted in another post the speaker volume could be better. I would have looked elsewhere had I known these issues. The 5 inch display was a selling feature I was looking for. The phone does work well and the edge to edge display is great. Too bad it has some flaws.

Yes the viewable area minus the feature buttons is about 4.6. And this is measured diagonal. I have the phone and measuring tape in hand right now.

The on screen buttons don't count against screen size as they are still part of the screen. When watching videos and stuff the buttons do disappear. Most non Samsung devices now have on screen buttons.

If you have this phone you will know this isn’t the case with this phone. The only program that takes the whole screen is the camera but taken pictures view in the shorter screen. Video’s view in the shorter screen. So no it’s not a true 5 inch screen.

That's not true at all....it plays videos and games in full screen......are you positive you own the phone? It works just like every other android device with on screen buttons......android 4.4 has a thing called immersive mode. It is actually designed to be used on devices with on screen buttons that's how google makes it. When you play a video from say you tube or Netflix or something you turn the phone over to landscape mode and the buttons go away. By your thinking the nexus 6 doesn't have a 6 inch screen the nexus 5 doesn't have a 5 inch all the motos have smaller screens the lg g2 g3.. So on and so on. Almost every company uses onscreen buttons now because that's how Google wants it.

Yes I have had this phone since the first of Dec. I do see some videos opening in full screen but not all and none of my game or other apps do. Email, web browsing, and texting all open in the shorter screen. My niece has the S5 with a 5.1 screen with the function buttons below the screen and that phone opens full screen. So I’m guessing any phone that has the function buttons within the screen will have the same issues. If it is not a true 5 inch screen then say so in the phone description. FYI ZTE, LG, Kyocera, Alcatel and others have their function buttons below the viewable screen. As for immersive mode my phone kitkat 4.4.2 does not have such a mode setting that I can find. Might be specific to a phone manufacturer and not kitkat.

Its built into kit Kat. Kit Kat is designed to be used on phones with on screen buttons. It is a true 5 inch screen. Yes Samsung and a few cheaper OEMS still use offscreen buttons but lg does not anymore. All the newer lg devices will have onscreen buttons. It's how google designs android now with onscreen buttons. If you want to make the argument that not everywhere you get 5 inches of viewing space fine. You would make that argument for every device ever made. They all have status bars to. But saying the screen isn't 5 inches is a lie. The screen is a 5 inch screen.

Yes I see you know quite a bit more about cell phones than I but if you read my original post you will see I agree the screen is 5 inches but the viewable area is less. A few things may load full screen but most don’t and I don’t have any apps that do other than the video player. Thanks for your help in understanding the features of Kitkat. It is good to know.
