Help Display power consumption spoils the fun

I have now owned the IS for about 4 months. And I continue to be impressed how good a piece of hardware it is. I have upgraded to Gingerbread.

There are only couple of things that mar the experience and I haven't been able to figure out much what to do about those.

First, the screen is gorgeous no doubt, but ends up consuming most of the power. I use my phone sparingly (about 15-20 minutes of calls which keeps screen off due to proximity sensor and maybe 30-40 minutes of active WiFi usage in a day). With this kind of usage, the display always seems to report almost 50% of power consumed and the phone barely lasts morning 8am to night 9pm. I wish there was AMOLED screen on this one. I have tried to reduce brightness manually to about 25%, and that seems to help a bit, but spoils the fun with this otherwise beautiful display. Plus I prefer to have Auto Brightness to be able to deal with readability in the open. What I would really like is a coarse brightness control within Auto Brightness.

Second, I don't know why they have such a crappy speakerphone capability in this phone. Even with loudest media volume, you have to strain to hear the audio, so speaker phone usage is very difficult and watching video etc. is also not fun.
