Reading the reviews on Amazon for the various Desire Docks, it's clear that none of them will fit a Desire with a gel skin. The Dock for my Sansa Fuze is big enough, looks good and has a back support, but has the wrong connector.
.
So I bought a Spartechnik Dock, as it's basically the same thing. But when it came, unfortunately the hole to place the Desire in was custom made for the Desire, and didn't fit the increased size of a Desire + skin.
Dock Mk 1.
So, I used my trusty Dremel and made the hole bigger, then promptly ruined the existing connector by touching the top of the connector with the araldite, which ran into the contacts.
then, after I had calmed down, using some more Araldite, I CAREFULLY glued in a spare connecting cable I had lying around.
Not very visually appealing, but it works!
Dock Mk 2.
Seeing as the Sansa Fuze Dock is the right size but just has the wrong connector, I bought another Fuze dock off ebay, and a mini-USB to USB cable. I then carefully took out the existing connector and internal small circuit board it was attached to, then using a craft knife increased the hole size to fit the mini-USB connector. The support for the Fuze connector was at exactly the right angle for the Desire, so it was just a case of using some Araldite to glue the new connector into place. Flying lead goes straight out the back of the Dock.
And the end result:
My skinned Desire fits perfectly, is easy to put in and take off from the dock, and is supported at the back with the rubber support, and is a perfect match for my Fuze Dock.
Hope I've provided some inspiration for someone wanting a dock for their skinned phone . . .
