DIY screen darkening for bedside clock

You can use an app like Lux to lower the brightness threshold below what is normally possible - be careful though, as you can actually lower the brightness too far, resulting in a pitch-black screen.

Lux also functions a plugin for Tasker, so you could create a Tasker profile to automatically enable the super-dim brightness setting via Lux at a certain time (for instance) like boyo1991 mentioned.

U gotta teach though brother when you make a statement like that ;)
Or build it for him :)

I suppose you are correct sir.

For this example I will do this so that no plugins or anything will be needed.

First, make an event profile, select sensor.

It will then ask if you want gesture, or shake, I chose shake and left the standard sensitivities.

It will now take you to creating a task. Press the + sign and select display brightness. Check all the boxes and use the slider to select brightness.

You do not need any plugins and its a very simple task to be done. And its very easy to access. Just shake your phone like your rolling dice.

Have fun ;D

Edit:

Note that you can have an event be a time. This would be a better option. Just requires more profiles and tasks. But can be used to dim at a certain time and brighten back up.

I just tried Lux, but I'm still able to *READ A MAGAZINE* in the dark, just with the Nexus 5 backlight, even when turned to minimum brightness and even when showing a fully black screen.
I didn't try the other app though.
