Do apps update themselves

I'm under the impression that installed apps are supposed to update themselves, or there is a setting that needs to be turned on to do that. Do I understand correctly? If there is a setting where is it? I noticed that Maps is not the latest version, although I think it was just released. Thanks.
 
By default, the market (app store) will notify you when apps have updates available. Unless you checked the "update automatically" box when you first downloaded it, you have to click on each update and download it manually.

At any point, you can go into your downloads from the market (app store) and check the "update automatically" box for whatever app you want.
 
The Maps app was preinstalled, so I'm not sure how that is set up. I will download it myself and then I can set it the way I want it. Thanks.
 
Yes, Google maps, but I was a little confused about that when I first got the phone because I don't have a "Google Maps" app. There is a "Maps" app and a "Navigation" app. I went in to the market and indeed saw that there was an update notice for Google Maps, so I have now done that. What's not clear is what is meant by notify me of an update. When I looked it said update, but I'm not aware of being notified.
 
For updates, I noticed a small icon(s) in the upper left of the phone. When I used the drop-down menu thingy (whatever it's called) at the top, it pointed out that 4 of my apps. had updates. One button said "update all" and when pressed, they all updated quickly.
 
Didn't notice an icon, but it may have been there. At the moment I don't have much installed, mainly what came on the phone, so over time maybe it will be more apparent that there are updates. Thanks.
 
You know, coming from the world of iOS (iPhones), these notifications are one big difference. Here we get this little icon on the upper left corner whereas on the iPhone it would vary with a number over the icon for the App Store.
 
its suppose to update and give u an icon whenever there is an update but it never works...ive never once had the icon pop up on me..and yes its set to have auto update under settings..i have to actually open the market to goto my apps then it will show me if there are updates..but the push update for me doesnt work.
 
I had to go in now to all my apps and put a check mark for the auto update. I'll see if it works automatically now.
