Hello -

I recently purchased an SD card. The phone doesn't always recognize that the SD is installed. Do I have to mount the SD card each time I install it?

Thank you!

What are you doing exactly.. if you're just popping the back off while the phone is on and taking out the card.. then you will have to reboot the phone with card installed so it will automount the card... which, I don't recommend you taking out the microSD while it's on and not unmounting it properly, quick way to get data corruption if it happens to be accessing your microSD at the moment..

Are you taking out the microSD card often? If so, why? You can always plug it into the PC and set your USB setting to storage device to access it that way....

No. Android should recognize it immediately. What error are you seeing? If the card has become corrupted, you will see an icon on the notification bar and a comment in the notifications about the card being damaged or words to that effect.

Make sure that the card is seated properly and fully. If it is and the phone still doesn't recognize it or gives a mounting error, then you probably need to format the card. You can do that while it's in the phone in the same settings section that I discuss below.

Before you remove the card, make sure that you go to Menu -> Settings -> SD care & phone storage. Under the "SD card" section, tap on "Unmount SD card". That will push the write cache to the card and unmount it. If you pull the card without either doing this or turning the phone off first, the file allocation table on the card may become corrupt. Been there, done that. My card became unreadable on the Atrix, but my PC was able to read it so that I could back it up before formatting it. I did indeed find one directory on it that was trashed. BTW, this isn't unique to Android, but is true on all operating systems.
