Root Do I have write access or not?

So I'm trying to install Link2SD but it fails to create the script because "not enough memory" which I read actually means it does not have write permissions to /system.

I downloaded Root Explorer and it seems to *think* it's able to write there, but in reality it doesn't. For example, I moved out one of the ringtunes in system/media/audio/ringtones, and it disappeared from the original location in Root Explorer. However after restarting the phone, the file is back. Same with some permissions I changed. It said they were successful but after a restart, the original permissions are back.

The phone is rooted with the Unrevoked3 method and I've previously used CyanogenMod 6 and 7RC on it, but I didn't like them so went back to rooted stock Desire by restoring from the backup I made before switching (but after rooting).

You can't write to /system whilst android is running unless you are s-off.

The link to sd shouldn't need access to system so not sure that's your problem.

What Rom are you on? If its got init.d support, you could just flash an a2sd script

Edit. Oh your rooted stock.

You could get a better rooted stock. Are you gsm (sim card) or cdma?
