Do I need an anti virus app plus few other things need help with please

Hello just bought my first android phone after owning an Iphone 3G and Iphone4. I am loving my phone only problem I have at the moment is I can't put it down and leave it alone :D always the case when I buy a new gadget and only bought it yesterday.

I have heard how great the android world is etc but it is more possible to download a virus with android so was curious is it worth having an anti virus app?

I have owned a macbook pro since January 2011 and having been a windows user for around 20 years previously I am now a bit scared installing things on systems thinking it will causes freezes and crashes especially with anti virus installed.

I have not had any problems with wi-fi connection and my battery lasted 20 hours (i slept for 6 of them though) mainly just installed apps and playing around with the phone. Should i still install juice defender despite the battery lasting 20 hours?

I don't understand why so many bash apple products so much. I find apple customer service second to none for instance had a problem with my iphone 4 a few weeks back and they just gave me a new one there and then. I have not had any problems with my ipad, ipod 1st gen, macbook or iphone 3G.
I think the txt is sharper on an iphone, the iphone is more user friendly and charges up quicker however apple hold your hand a bit too much and charge you for it.

I was able to sync my Facebook contacts pictures to my phone for free and this android device while I had to pay for it on the app store for the iphone and I'm an adult I want to venture in the big bad world and customise for my phone making it unique to other samsung galaxy s2 owners.
I am not biased to anything just biased to great gadgets that work :)

I don't use my device as a phone much, I use it more as a multimedia device for when it is not possible for me to look for info on my computer or ipad.
I have looked at the forum in search of what apps to download.
Launcher pro, Beautiful Widget, Zedge are highly recommended, will it conflict in any way if I have all them 3 customisable programs installed at the same time?
I have seen xbmc mentioned a lot but what is it? Sorry so many questions. I am surprised there is not a sky sports football news like there is on the iphone.
Thank You in advance for your help.

An anti virus us always a good idea, I don't care what anyone says. Yes some OS's are more secure than others, but there is always a slight risk.

I used "anti virus" before it was taken over by AVG and it did well for me. Scans everything you download, and links in texts as they come in. in a Sgs2 I don't think you'll have to worry about it using much of your resource pool either. So you might as well use something than nothing.

If your looking for battery life while unrooted then turn your brightness down, you probably won't need it any higher than about 30%

Also when not in use turn background data off, get rid is unused widgets, and turn mobile data off, and try a dark background pic.

If you root then it's probably worth buying set cpu from market to underclock the phone when not in use.

Granted for rooted users you can also look for a better firmware solution, if go with cynogen mod, but I don't believe it's been finished for the sgs2 yet.

Thank You for the quick reply, what anti virus programme do you recommend? I am happy with the battery time at the moment, how do you turn off background data sorry silly question just never used android before.
Does the phone have live wallpaper and if i install live wallpaper does it use any data or anything? I thought the screen changes to what the weather is outside but apart from the icon via accweather the screen has stayed the same.

I am still worried that if I download too many apps it might slow down the phone, only downloaded sky+, Angry Birds, IMBDb, Vevo, Twitter, Facebook, Spotify and flixster so far which I already had on my iphone.

Why does it take so long for the phone to charge to 100%? I leave it to run right down so it turns itself off as there is no power left on the battery.

For an antivirus, antivirus free from avg moblation should do you for a start.

To turn background data off goto settings> accounts & sync> background data.

be aware that any "live" apps/widgets/email won't update.

Same for mobile data, if switched off, you basically lose internet functions until switched on again.

For an example, with background data off, you can still browse online web pages, but with mobile data off you can't.

Turning both off when not needed will give you a lot more battery life.

Why does it take so long for the phone to charge to 100%?

How long is "so long"? My own charges from power-off-empty to 100% in approx 3hrs. Bear in mind that, as the battery approaches full capacity the current supplied is reduced, so it probably reaches 75% in around half that time.

My iphone took no more than an hour to charge to 100%. I am not patient enough to wait for it to be charged before playing around with it and the socket is too far away :)

well enough with the iphone comparisons already.. lol. this isnt an iphone. overnight charge is the way to go. although yeah, i get around 75% charge in just over an hour.

There are several free antiviruses available in the android market (Market application comes preinstalled on galaxy s2) like: Anti-Virus Free (AVG), Anti-Virus Pro (AVG-trial), McAfee Mobile Security, McAfee WaveSecure, McAfee Family Protection (if you've got little kids using your phone), Norton Mobile Security, BitDefender Mobile Security, etc

I have installed BitDefender Mobile Security on my Galaxy S II. I have never used it before, but BitDefender is the #1 PC antivirus for this year. So I thought it might be the best mobile phone antivirus as well. It works smoothly, doesn't slow down my galaxy s2 (I've got around 150 applications on my phone: default apps, email apps, chatting apps, games, news, jokes, audio/video players, remote connection, converters, etc) and it scans every single application I download. Full malware scanning takes less than 30 seconds!

If ESET NOD32 was available, I would have installed it.

So, you choose ;)
