Root Do I need to create a GoldCard?

I have a Orange branded Desire (GSM). Do I need to create a goldcard if I intend to root and flash CM7? If so, at what point in the rooting process (I'm following Free Your Android - search results ) do I use the goldcard, and secondly, do I use a different sd-card? I have a spare 2gb card that I could use.

Hi there, I am also trying to root my Orange branded Desire.

I have read through the FAQ here and still don't know if I need to create a Goldcard.

There is a line: 'However, this RUU doesn't work on all branded phones (theres a list somewhere of which work)'.

I can't find a reliable list that suggests one way or another whether Orange users need a goldcard or not. Can anyone point me towards it?

What part of "if your phone is branded, you should definitely make one" is it you're having trouble with ?

The line "his RUU doesn't work on all branded phones" is talking about the "official" HTC GB RUU which you're unlikely to want to use if you're thinking of rooting and putting CM7 on.
 
The ruu works on all European desires therefore, no goldcard needed for using that ruu. However, that ruu relies on shipped-roms.com being available (which is a single point of failure) so its best to make one

I think the point being made is that if you need to return to stock in the future you can (if compatible) flash the official 2.3 RUU & hence won't need a goldcard.

I'll probably get shot down for suggesting this but you could try running the RUU first then root using revolutionary.

Problem there is ruu wipes all data. Backups such as titanium and nandroid are ruled out before starting

Why not download from shipped ROMs and save a copy? But like you said making a goldcard covers all bases.
 
Failure to prepare.... prepare to fail. Without a goldcard, there is literally only one ruu that can be used. What then if something doesn't work with that ruu?!

There's no harm in opening up every other ruu, just in case so why are we still debating this?!
 
Tbh a gold card is so easy to make, I'd make one for a just incase even if the 2.3 RUU is available.
I would also download the RUU and keep it safe, just incase the site goes down. (as someone else just mentioned)
 
@ Griff_LI -- steady on there, I was just asking about the list that was mentioned. The section on Goldcards was a little contradictory in places. I feel I have a clearer answer from this thread.

Follow up question. When we say 'SD card', we presumably mean a micro SD, as it has to go in the phone (I know that sounds obvious, just covering all the bases).

Second follow up (assuming it's a micro SD we're talking about). Can I use the 4GB Micro SD that came with the phone? Or is the gold card something I should keep as an archive for the life of my phone? Or can I also use the card for additional storage when it's also being used as a Goldcard?

Thanks in advance, I know these are probably horrible n00b questions, but I seem to have a real technical block when it comes to cell phones.
 
Yes, microsd card. If you have a spare one, use that because if you partition your micro sd gold card, it no.longer is gold.

Otherwise its fine to use it as a storage device
 
Seems I followed the advice in here, made a goldcard and kept a copy of the file. Downloaded the stock ROM for my phone before starting. Took backups of apps and sms then did root. Got nandroid backup. Then I installed MildWild4.0. All going well so far didn't have any issues getting this far.
 
Ah. Good to know, albeit a bit late.

Got the beautiful Redux 2.31 rocking and rolling on my handset now anyway, so that's me happy.
