Root DO NOT attempt to install the ics OTA if you are rooted

scotty85

Extreme Android User
again:

warning! do NOT attempt to install the OTA if you are rooted.

the ICS update contains a new hboot, and new mounting points for sd card and internal storage, among other things.

this means, that even if you attempt to install a stock recovery so the phone can OTA,it will not work.

-if you have to old eng hboot 1.04.2000,it will be replaced by hboot 1.08.0000,leaving you s on and unrooted.

-if you have a permant hboot cuortesy of shadowmite,or revolutionary,it will not be overwritten. since this hboot is NOT compatible with ICS,the rom will not boot. other devices this results in bootloops,i assume this will be the same.

the only way to recieve the OTA is to be 100% stock, including s on hboot 1.04 or 1.05. i very strongly recomend you do not do this- your only solution to reroot may be htcdev unlock,as we have no idea what temp root exploits may work, and 1.08 hboot is not supported by revolutionary.

what you need to do:
is patiently wait for someone to patch the new hboot for s-off,or for someone to make a recovery flashable rom, wich will have the mount points modded to work with your current s off hboot.

hope this helps. :) holler if you have questions :)

I rooted revolutionary a long time ago and forgot that I did... I never fully rooted I just had revolutionary loaded on my phone... well today in all the excitement I updated. Now I receive a blue triangle error with a blue package next to it... I can reboot the phone back to gingerbread but it will autoshutdown a few minutes later...

What do i do!!!

have you tried useing the stock recovery to wipe cache?
-boot to hboot
-select recovery
-on that screen(triangle and !) hold volume UP and power until you see a menu. wipe cache and reboot.

if that does not work, you may need to run an RUU to get back to working order:

i can only speculate that your phone freaked out when it had to bypass the bootloader install. i may go back to GB,install the permant hboot, and try again and see what happens :)

when my phone OTAed,i was on the non permant hboot, and it overwrote it just fine.

i have since this post, swapped 1.08 for the 1.04 non permanent patched hboot, and the phone has booted and seems stable, and i can still see both sd card and internal storage,so maybe this isnt quite as big a deal as i initally thot.

ill run the TB for the day and see if any issues from using the old hboot with the new firmware pop up. :)

**the best thing, still,is to wait for a recovery flashable rom,as it appears above you may not be able to OTA withthe permanent hboot, and since most thunderbolts are not radio s off like mine, using an overwriteable hboot will leave you s on.

Ironic that people who never touched their phones will have a fully-functioning ICS before any of us who rooted & have been trying buggy ICS ROMs for many months.

Stupid phone turned 4G on all on its own, and started downloading update. Turned the phone off to stop, but the question is, what to disable/delete to stop the automatic DL?

best bet is to boot to recovery, make a backup, wipe data and caches and install the stock ICS rom mentioned in the other thread.

alternatively you can remove or rename the "OTAcerts" file founf in(i think) system/etc/security in gingerbread. this will let the phone download the OTA package, but not be able to install it.

i also think tarters all i one tool has an options to add/remove the OTAcerts files.

the good news is ive run my TB for 2 days now on the old hboot, and it seems to be running fine,so at least that part of it seems is not of so much a worry :)

Is there any disadvantage to using the htcdev unlock? My phone tried to OTA last night and I'm thinking about just wiping everything and starting over.

yes! there are several disadvantages to htcdev unlock:
-recovery cannot install the kernel. youll need to manually install the kernel,or boot recovery into phone memory every time you want to use it. in short, youll always need a PC to flash a new rom,or restore a backup
-you only have access to boot/system/recovery. no more changing radios, splash images,or any other partition.
-you cannot go backwards in firmware versions or run any ruu that you want. until and ruu is released for ICS,this could put you in a really bad spot with a soft brick(i.e. with no ruu to run,it could be permanent)

i would pretty strongly recomend you do NOT go back to s on in order to use the OTA. the recovery flashzble stock rom really will be just as good :smokingsomb:

Scotty, I have a question...

Currently sitting at
Mecha xd ship s-off
Hboot-6.04.1002

I had a firmware it's that tried several times, rebooted into recovery and wiped cache, now am stuck on splash screen...tried to reload Rom,

-ginger_breadrock_v3.1a_2.11.605.9.zip

Finds,
Opens,
Install starts, blue bar makes it 25% then says :assert failed: failed write raw image /tem/boot.img error in /sdcard/ginger_breadrock_v3.....etc.
Status 7
Aborted

1 does status 7 mean anything significant?
2 any way I can fix this without a computer? 500 miles from home and I will be here almost a month.
3 if I can save my phone is there something I missed to have prevented this in the first place? Pretty sure I did NOT change the .zip to .zip.bak

Any help is appreciated,
Thank you, DJ

Are you tying a full wipe prior to installing the Rom? Have you flashed this particular download before? If not,you might try redownloading it. Don't unzip the Rom,or change its file extension. You do still have a custom recovery installed, correct?

Seems your best bet is to do a full wipe, and restore a backup.

If you can't get a Rom to install,or a backup to restore, then you'll prolly need an RUU. Unfortunately, you'll need something to download a Rom or ruu,I can't think of anything else that would not require a second device to download files.

Best way that I know of to prevent OTA disasters on a stock Rom is to rename the "OTAcerts" zip located in system/etc/security

Thanks I did do a full wipe, opened the otacert and added .bak to block, took a few tries but I now have a working phone...on the plus side I flashed a newer radio and slightly newer Rom and overall it seems better than ever. I did miss mounting my sD card...hard to remember this stuff when you knock it out of the park on your first or second try, over 2 years on this phone and it still kicks a$$!

I ran into this problem over the weekend.... I "rooted" only to get rid of bloatware and enable wifi tether, really don't go very deep into the other options. That said, I'd really like to get the ICS OTA update and just revert to an unrooted state. I don't really remember what I did to root my phone, it was one of those 'all in one' packages and runs something called clockworks (Revolutionary?) is there a simple way to unroot? Or am I stuck?

Unrooting it will be a pain. I did it, but I have no idea what I did; a combination of several posts here and time. You can get the ICS OTA by flashing it if you want here: InfectedROM Android Community Forums

You will lose your data if you flash this, so do a backup.

I agree competely. Flashing the Rom is just like getting the ota. There are zero benefits to unrooting.

Thanks, I already wiped my data once on Saturday trying to do the OTA, so I'm not going to lose anything there.

Thinking about this more, is there any real advantage to ICS? My reason for wanting the OTA was simply to return to a "stock" version while retaining the reasons I rooted in the first place (which may not even be true, I thought with ICS you could remove any programs and put more on SD as well as do wifi tether, but I'm not sure if the Verizon OTA gives you that anyway)

So what will be better/different with ICS compared to my 2.3 now if I'm rooted already?

Oh Geez. I have been out of the loop for a long time now...

So I would like ICS and I am rooted.

My specs: I did root on Revolutionary forever ago when it first came out for the Thunderbolt.

Android Version: 2.3.7
Kernel: 2.6.35.14 imoseyon 6.2.1AOSP
Rom: SfkCM7(newest rom i put on back in like Sept/Oct '12)

So what steps would I need to take to at least get a rooted ICS onto my phone?

and is there right now a really easy version for how to do it? :P

Many Thanks Scotty!

just flash a new rom. use either the stock one linked above,or browse xda/rootz for a custom rom based on it. i ran it stock for a couple days and had no issue. it was just like my stock rezound ;)

Ah sweet, sounds easy enough. So none of that hard looking bits like in that downgrade thread or whatever its called.

So I backed up the essentials on Titanium. Shut down and do a nand-backup and then flash the rom and the appropriate radio?

i ran the stock OTA for 2 or 3 days and had no prollems with it. its hard for me to comment on battery life,as my batteries are pretty old now,and im a pretty high user

cant comment on the other 2,as the TB hasnt been my DD for some time now,but i personally would be looking for functional AOSP in some form ;)

G'day...

Recently my touch screen died on the right side and I had to order a new phone. They sent me a (refurb) thunderbolt with:

Android: 4.0.4
HTC Sense: 3.6
Software Number: 7.02.605.06710RD

HBoot 1.08.0000

As I understand it, this is an unrootable version. I still currently have my old phone and haven't sent it back yet. Can I swap the guts of this new phone to the case of the old phone, and conversly install the old guts in the new case, and send back the old case with the new phone inside, and keep the New Screen with the old phone guts?

I can at least swap the screen of the new phone to the old phone, but when I send back the return phone, it would have the new stickers under the battery with the old screen. I'd hate them to spank me for sending back the wrong stickers.

I'd really hate to lose my ROOT on the phone, and this is the only thing I can think of at this time? Is this worth doing? Has anyone heard of a possible root to this version coming out in the near future?

I'm caught in an OTA update loop with my T-bolt. My phone is ICS, rooted and has the non-stock recovery on it.

Is there a copy of a stock recovery somewhere that so that I can flash, unroot, OTA, and thereby get out of the 7th circle?
