Root Do not root your G tablet!

It has been a while since I posted the article. I am glad it attracted much interest and it was helpful for some. As for me I realized that i really did not have much use for a tablet after all, so i ended up selling my Gtablet about what i bought it for in US (sold in Brazil). As many mentioned Gtab is great piece of hardware with software flaws that can be overcome one way or another. I now have upgraded my laptop to windows 8 (developer version) ! and My cellphone to Galaxy nexus with android 4 . Between the two I am happy doing my business while still leaving on the technological edge.

Thank you for this thread! I bought the gTablet for my parents and really wanted to and thought I would have to Root and ROM the heck out of this thing so they would have a nice time with it. This thread might just change my mind...

I bought the Gtablet for my son, I thought he could find more apps then on the Ipad. Unfortunatley 75% of the app games he loads won't work. According to viewsonic they are not compatable with tablets. They suggested to reroot the tablet so I can go to the android market and download compatiable tablet apps. Of course I have to send my tablet to them and a check for a $95.00 in order for them to root it professionaly. According to your article I shouldn't reroot this tablet, is there a way to upgrade to HC and download apps from any android market that are compatiable with the Gtablet. If so where I can I find this information. Thanks for your help!

I had listed few android markets in the article and since then there has been some new ones also which with Google Search can be found.

I am not familiar with games but I usually had found the same applications that are on the official android market in other places. sometimes a simple google search of the application name + apk has located it.

However if game applications are hard to find due to their more commercial nature, you may need to look in to the option of rooting the tablet.

Good Luck

Thanks again for your help...
When I search for a name -APK alot of the APK files are not compatiable. Even though they are under the Tablet catagorie. When downloading them they say phone app, some will work most won't. Someone suggested rooting to Vegan I am not a tech, is this real dificult to install. I noticed on the forum a link for rooting for dummies, would I follow that?

This article is for majority of ViewSonic G Tablet users who want to use their tablet for work, productivity and entertainment instead of spending more than 5% of their use time, fixing it. However, if you enjoy playing with your device configurations or if you are a professional developer who do this for living obviously this article is not for you.

Thanks DavidET. I saw your message too late... my gtablet does not boot or go into recovery mode... it only shows 3 birds.

Sorry to hear that. You are not the only one with this problem and depending on the cause and nature of it, i hope you can find a solution on internet. Good Luck.

It would be hard to diagnose without knowing what your tablet's original bootloader is (1.1 or 1.2) and what rom where you trying to root to (a 1.1 rom or a 1.2 rom). However, NVFlash should get you back to the original state of your tablet.

Hello, I have been reading this thread with interest since I own a G-tab and want to optimize the performance and hopefully allow it to work with my flash intensive system at work. I found a few things that I need to say about the FLASH operation in point #3. I have the latest G-tab firmware and the latest FLASH and I CANNOT get it to work at my office. I even took your advice and downloaded SKYFIRE and it still does not work in that browser. Second, downloading the appstore from Amazon was a trying experience but I finally managed to do it and link it to my Amazon account. Thanks for that recommend. Lastly I find the operation of this tablet squirrelly at best. Sometimes I turn it on and the date is 2009 and I have to reset the date and time on it. Friend has one and he has the same problems. OH and one more thing. There were force close issues out of the box with Colornote. Not even sure what it is but I always have to force close it. I was very tempted to mess with my Gtab after viewing RayWaldo (Bishop of Technology) website where he demonstrates how to get flash to work so well. Now I am ambivilent. Thanks for your suggestions.

I agree, after putting honeycomb on it, i feel like i got a 500$ tab for only 260$. What makes it better is that those 500$ tabs dont have a microsd slot or a full size USB port

Hi, I just bought an Gtablet and I'm a complete newbie at Android world. And my Gtablet is: Model #: UPC300-2.2, Android OS: 2.2, Tap UI version: 1.2-5699, Kernel version: 2.6.3.9-svn4979. So, please, do you still use Honeycomb? If so still happy? If so, can it fit my model and bootloader? Thanks.

Marcos - welcome to the forums!

I know this is a WAY late welcome, but I just got my rooted & ROmmed gTablet back from warranty work, completely restored to stock. So now I am working on flashing it up to a Jelly Bean ROM. To answer your question:

Since you are on a 1.2 bootloader, Honeycomb and beyond should not be an issue for you. Just make SURE you use a ROM for the 1.2 bootloader :)
