Help Do updates wipe the phone?

Firstly I don't have one of these phones but my girlfriend does. She got it last May and there have never ever been any updates available in the "About Phone > Check for updates" screen, but then I read the other day that apparently you must use Kies to update the software, and I looked on Wikipedia and saw there have been quite a few updates to the S2 since 2.3.3.

Firstly are these updates worth getting, and secondly, do they wipe the phone when installed via Kies? Whenever I updated my X10 it would erase everything.

Official firmware update for Gingerbread via Kies in non-wiped. That said, sometimes there are problems after updates that can only be resolved with a factory reset and cache wipe.

Not sure about ICS but even if it is non-wipe, I suspect there would be too many issues if you do not wipe it.

Cheers

I updated to ICS via Odin. It didn't wipe my phone however all the apps had to be rearranged back to where they were before the update. The only app data I lost was in trip advisor.

Updates are supposed to work like this:

Official OTA updates or those though Kies will update your phone to the current OS while preserving your apps and settings (to the best of their ability)

Leaked unofficial updates applied through ODIN or CWM shouldn't wipe the phone, but unless you are updating from a version that's been thoroughly tested with the release it could go either way.

Flashing a rom to update will wipe user data and settings back to factory default.

In all cases, the contents of your /sdcard partition shouldn't be affected.

That said, things don't always work as intended so it's very important to make sure you have backed up ALL important data before updating or you risk losing it.
