Do you have a tip/trick for ICS? Post it here.

I'm on my third Android Phone.
Frist, was the Verizon Galaxy S,
Second, I tried the RAZR for a few weeks.
Now, I'm on the Galaxy Nexus.

Through all phones I make it my own by using:
Launcher Pro
Folder Organizer
SwiftKey X Keyboard

So far, I like the phone. Although I'm concerned about all the battery life issues I'm hearing. If it get's bad, then I'm going to try Juice Defender.

I moved away from the RAZR, because it kept loosing a data connection. I haven't had that issue yet on the Nexus, but his is only my second day on it.

So now the big question is when will an app be out that lets you easily toggle LTE? The only ones are like those that came out for the Thunderbolt that are shortcuts to the mobile network page lol. That's still 3 steps to swap on and off from LTE. You shouldn't need to be rooted for that, since it's really just a menu option you flip on and off...I wonder when someone will code it.

I imagine someone will code it when the proper API is out for it. This, and the GPS toggle on/off, aren't possible right now from what I understand...so it's not that no one can be bothered to make one, it's that they don't have access to it on ICS. I'm not sure why.

You can use the power control panel a stock widget to toggle gps on and off

I think the phone does a pretty good job on the battery. Juice defender will just add a straw to the camels back.

As someone else who had a Fascinate and now has a GNex i have a few suggestions. ADW Launcher EX, is MUCH better than Launcher Pro Plus (which is also a dead app hasn't been updated in many months and certainly not updated for ICS.) ADW EX is much faster, crashes/memory maxes far less, had more capabilities, etc. I used Launcher pro for a long time and the switch to adw took a day and i never looked back, it will take you a few min to stop it you like how you want but once you do it's so much better.

That said, i don't use either anymore since the Gnex! I love the stock ICS launcher, it's great and the less processes you can have running all the time better. I did a few mods,i got rid of the search bar, enabled landscape, added a search soft key, etc. It's great. If you need more customization try Nova Launcher.

Auto App Organizer is much better than Folder Organizer, but i don't use either now, just use the folder support built into ICS.

Swype is woah superior to Swiftkey and any other touchscreen keyboards. It's the fastest and smartest by far.

My only major dissatisfaction with the Stock Launcher is that it doesn't rotate to landscape mode (and can't figure out why they wouldn't put that in, at least as an option).

How did you accomplish this? Was Root required?

Thanks.

You can load the Nova Launcher without root. It will rotate then.

Thanks, and understood. I'm considering the Nova Launcher for this reason. Just waiting for it to 'mature' a little.

That's why I was curious about this post, which implied that landscape rotation for the stock launcher could be accomplished without Nova Launcher, through some type of mod.

Well, it would be a great tip and a trick for me if I could get the stock launcher to simply rotate to landscape orientation without me having to go through a whole lot of effort! :)

Would be better if the rotation is faster and didn't take 30 seconds to switch on apps on stock

I thought I was the only person who had this line of thinking - thank you for making me feel less alone.
Any app I that can store anything immediately gets checked to see if there are any instant upload options. Even the innocent pics don't need to go anywhere right away. I'll choose who gets what.

Ah you bunch of chickens...it all goes to a private folder and no one sees anything...it's all about ease of sharing :D

These are tips and tricks?

Well, like many "tips and tricks" threads, there is a bit of generic support banter (quite a bit at times ;)) and recommendation posting, chat and sandwich making. :D

Staffers try to keep things rolling on topic in this sort of thread, especially when it's a sticky thread, encouraging members to come in only with a true tip or trick to share with GNex users. We hint at the possibility of the thread being unstuck, closed or removed. We offer beer. We try everything.

But, in the end, we drink the beer ourselves and it loosens our idealistic view of things a bit, so we sit back and enjoy the show, er I mean we read and marvel at the productive exchange of info. ;)

Turn your stock keyboard auto-correct up to 'aggressive correction'. (Settings > Language & input > Android keyboard settings > Auto correction). People are speculating that it's based on BlindType (Google bought them about a year ago), and it appears I can just blaze through a bunch of key strokes and have almost exactly what I intended come up. Slang, doesn't work out so well (obviously).

did you try "aggressive" or "Very Aggressive"????

I just checked the "Aggressive" box. I thought we would have Blind Type ability out of the box. The keyboard is unbelievably great. So maybe this will make it better.

thanks for this

The questions are very conducive to keeping the thread alive. There are a TON of things I do on my phone that I'd never consider a tip/trick, until someone asks a question and I answer and then get 13 thanks for my answer..

Something like putting the phone on silent via the volume toggle.. or using the touch screen to control volume after using the volume toggle to enable it.. That's not a trick in my mind, and it's not a tip I'd think to share, because I would think it's common knowledge, but it clearly is not.

I did really like the idea of putting tips/tricks/answers to questions in a different color for ease of readability for those who are solely trolling for tips, however. That's a great suggestion.

If you flash a deodexed ROM, even one that is basically stock (there is one I use on rootzwiki that is basically stock) there are flashable mods that remove the search bar and free that up to be used for widgits/shortcuts/folders, works great! Also there is the same mod that you can use to get a landscape view! Check out the dev section on rootzwiki for our phone, I think XDA has it too. Assuming it isn't here of course.

Or use NovaLauncher as suggested, but I prefer a modified stock launcher myself.

Nova Launcher IS a modified stock launcher

GPS doesn't use any power unless you actually see the GPS icon in the Notification Bar. That's when it's trying to pull a signal. And it's not fire and brimstone to the battery like people think. If you have a widget that is doing a quick rough search for location for weather, it's not a big deal. If you are navigating and keeping it on for a while, then yea it'll drain faster. But just having GPS activated doesn't mean GPS is running.

Agree 100% !!!!!!! Someone told me about that years ago so i tested it extensively. And you are correct sir. I don't notice one ounce of battery drain when i have the GPS checked off. i tried it with all three (Verizon location service, goggle location service and GPS). I tested all configurations possible (2 on or all three on or just one of each on). And having just the GPS one checked seemed to be the best battery saver actually. Even if it was just slightly

To prove your point you just gave me one. I had no idea we could slide the volume bar once you initiate it with the rocker. Good man for that one!!!!!!
thanks

It sure drained faster on my Fascinate when GPS was turned on.

This thread needs some sort of curating of the best tips--like how the "known issues" thread looks in the first post.

And no, I'm not volunteering!

I disagree. People who have been following this thread from the beginning have gotten a notification for each new tip which, I think anyway, is a great way to have a sort of "tip-a-day" type system. And best tips, A) is all a matter of opinion; a tip someone may consider useless may be the golden solution for someone else and B) I think that's partially what the "Thanks" system is for; more thanks=better tip. But maybe that's just me! To each his own right? And I apologize in advance for a non-tip post to all those thinking how you're going to yell at me while reading this :P
