Do you have a tip/trick for ICS? Post it here.

I disagree. People who have been following this thread from the beginning have gotten a notification for each new tip which, I think anyway, is a great way to have a sort of "tip-a-day" type system. And best tips, A) is all a matter of opinion; a tip someone may consider useless may be the golden solution for someone else and B) I think that's partially what the "Thanks" system is for; more thanks=better tip. But maybe that's just me! To each his own right? And I apologize in advance for a non-tip post to all those thinking how you're going to yell at me while reading this :P

As has been belabored again and again in this very thread, these posts need to be sorted in some fashion. Tips should be highlighted in blue or some other color so that people can actually find tips, which is the stated purpose of this thread. As for non-tip chatter and questions, the consensus seems to be that it should remain because that is part and parcel of a healthy tip thread. But, lately, this thread has become so much of the non-tip chatter, that it really doesn't warrant being pinned and labeled as a "do you have a tip, post it here" thread.

For f#&*'s sake, I don't know the first thing about how to moderate a thread or whether and under what circumstances one is bestowed with that power, but I'll do it if no one else will.

I think the reason we get non-tip posts is people getting the urge to respond to non-tip posts with other non-tip posts like I did...and then like you just responded to mine (making what you did no better by the way)...and many think like I just did...but this is just half, I have two tips :)

Tip 1: I LOVE the labs controls option for the browser, however it sort of limits what you can do without going in to the menu. I recommend ICS Browser+ (app from market). It offers extra controls to the labs side panel making it have a more complete functionality. It is IDENTICAL to the stock ICS Browser in appearance, except for the extra controls on the labs panel. There are also a few other options in the menu that the stock browser doesn't have. If you keep browser on your dock/homescreen, and you want the stock icon, if you use NovaLauncher, which was recommended in a previous post, you can extract the Icon from the browser and replace the ICS Browser+ one with that. (If anyone needs instructions on how to extract the icon let me know)

Tip 2: This is more of an ICS theming tip. I recommend Thumb Keyboard. It's my FAVORITE keyboard. One neat function in there that some may not know about, however, is the theming options. If you select the Ice Cream Sandwich theme, the keyboard will look very close to the stock keyboard. However if you're like me, you might want to go for a more unified look (I'm running the ICS Blue Softkey Mod FYI). So, after you select the ICS theme, if you go in to preferences, you'll see an option for coloring. If you leave all the coloring the same, but you change the 3 font colorings to ICS Blue, you now essentially have the ICS keyboard, with improved functionality, and ICS blue letters.

Hope someone found these helpful. :)

Please just provide tips for the GNex in this thread .. things will then fall into place. ;)

Maybe you're way ahead of me, but the tip when you receive a phone call and you're in a meeting, to flick the center "answer" button up, and it gives you like 5 options, I'm in a meeting, I'll call back, etc.

That's pretty handy.

Suspect it is only useful if somebody is calling on a cell phone, but I used it yesterday for that exact reason in a meeting.

And you can edit them within the Phone app (Settings --> Quick Responses).

The text reply to phone calls is an awesome feature and I was worried that ICS didn't carry it over from GB.

Right now, it doesn't look like you can "add" your own custom text replies to the quick response existing menu. Therefore, editing the existing quick responses per the immediately above post is the only way to get your custom responses on there in a practical way because using the custom message function when the phone call comes in might take too long.

I just found the "edit" choice in gallery and realized how many edit options there actually are, very cool. Because crop and rotate were listed in the settings menu underneath edit I thought thats all we could do.

From what I can tell Gnex allows way more editing options the the 4s.

Yup. I derived a great deal of value out of that thread. Thank you for that.

I offered to be the person to sort this thread out, but Frisco basically said "no" without providing any reasoned basis, and instead, just saying "please just provide tips." Ironically, that's exactly what people are failing to do, which is why this thread is so difficult to peruse in the first place.

Anyway, as Frisco asked, I'll just post tips from now on. But, as I stated before, I'll step up and sort the thread and distill the tips if that's wanted.

You still don't realize that by talking about this you're doing exactly what you're complaining about, so let it be. People complaining about how no one posts tips is actually what most of the non-tip posts are. That's why he said just post tips; he wants you to drop it. And as for no reason, it was so you wouldn't disagree and post another non-tip. Don't mention it anymore and as previously said, just post tips!

Sorry had to post but agree I have been fighting it off to say this :)

Don't know if anyone posted this, but if you hold down the space bar when typing it opens a quick select forinput method. Much easier than pulling down the notification bar.

I recently found Bird Bar, an app which brings down the notification bar with a swipe in from the top 2cm or so of the side of the screen in any app (including full screen ones) - useful on my GNex as the screen is sometimes too big to reach the top bar comfortably with one hand. Already nearly dropped it a couple of times trying to get notifications down with one hand...this might just save a few other people a few scratches! (The Lite version currently doesn't work alongside the ICS browser's thumb controls, but the full version definitely does.)

It's been driving me nuts that some of the 1x1 contact widgets did not show the little text icon when you click on them. After fiddling with it on and off over the past few weeks, I found a way to fix it. It's a pain, but it worked. Hope it helps someone!

1. Made note of the info for the contacts so I could re-enter them, then deleted each contact.
2. Created a Google contact for each person, leaving the phone number blank.
Created a VZW Backup Assistant contact for each person.
4. Joined the two contacts.
5. Ran "SyncMyPix" so the contact photos would show up.
6. Add the contact widget on your screen.
7. Click on the widget - the message indicator is NOT there. Click on the little people icon that brings up the contact in the People app.
8. Click the menu and Edit.
9. Now, under the Google contact, click Add a Field, and select Phone Number.
10. Enter the phone number and click Done.
11. Now, when you click on the widget, you should see the little text message icon next to the phone number.

Alright, I made an attempt to consolidate all of the tips and tricks into a single post and it came out far too messy to read. I also attempted to just create a post with links to each tip or trick, but it likewise became unintelligible quickly. The problem with these methods (as I see it) is that many of the follow up posts to some of these tips and tricks are critical to their use. Leaving them out or trying to consolidate them may cause issues. With these things in mind I went through and edited each tip or trick that I found so that the text is now blue. As someone suggested, I agree that this will make information easier to find.

I also thought about editing out the "off topic" discussions about things being off topic , but decided to leave them in as some are valid points. In the end it may actually help things stay on topic if people see them. Especially the comments from Frisco.

Moving forward, please mark all tips and/or tricks in blue text and let's keep to the topic of tips and tricks or the discussion of said tips and tricks.

Thank you

EDIT: If there is a tip I missed, please send a PM to the author or myself so that it can be blued as well.

That was my intention as well but was beat to the punch...Oh well, still enjoying this thread!

maybe its already posted but...

button on stock earbud, 1 click would just pause then start, but if u click it twice fast, it skips to next song.

another trick i found is that, while websurfing with ICS browser (or ICS browser+), if u hold <- back button on the bottom (next to home button), u get into history

and this could be a bug/glitch but if u open up a folder and click 2 apps at same time, image of app get stuck in background till u reboot.

Not sure if mentioned elsewhere, but, when you hold the back while in browser you're only one click away from your bookmarks, as opposed to the three clicks it takes going through the top menu

Following the bold and blue suggested format, here is a question....

SInce i am cheap and wont pay for texting (I have a google number for that and use voice to text for free) does anyone know how to disabled the quick responses in phone settings?

do you mean Google Voice number? how do you get it to work for texting?
(notice it is not in blue ;)

when closing one of your many open browser windows, you can just swipe up or down on the one you want to close. maybe easier than hitting the "X" button.

Can you copy and paste from your text messages with the galaxy nexus? If someone can answer this I would appreciate it. Thank you.
