I really like it. I haven't had the problems that a lot of people have reported. No random quitting. No weird connectivity issues (except a little when I installed Juice Defender, but none before or since), No super battery drain (have never lasted less than 7AM-Midnight, with heavy use, unless I was trying to power cycle and drained on purpose).

The GPS was rubbish out of the box, but the fix seems to work well enough that I'm not worried by it. I don't use the phone for turn-by-turn, though.

I've seen a little lag here and there, but anytime it seems unresponsive, I fire off ATK and everything bounces back.

I'll welcome any improvements in firmware or OS version that might be coming, but, for me, they aren't necessary for my enjoyment of the phone. I've really enjoyed the four weeks I've spent with it so far.
 
GPS isn't too big of a deal for me, using the network for location is "good enough".

I still have some laggy behavior and the front buttons aren't as responsive as I'd like.

I expect once Froyo hits and we can start using the other half of the phone's memory, it'll be much improved.

I'm past my 30 days and I didn't take it back. I DID take back my iPhone 4 for the Captivate, so that should answer the "like" question.
 
I'm glad we have reached a consensus here. The Captivate is a brilliant smartphone, and it will only get better from here.
 
I've owned a large number of smartphones of all types. The Samsung Captivate is my favorite. It's not perfect, nothing is. However it's truly excellent. With all due respect to others, I believe many who don't like this phone have failed to be patient and learn Android. This OS is completely different, if one does not do the work to learn it, you will miss out on a great opportunity.
 
Second option for me. I like the phone a lot, but I am on my third one already due to problems. I really want 2.2 on here. 2.1 seems pretty flaky. Just yesterday I stopped receiving SMS and have yet to resolve the issue. I don't do much in the way of hacking, but I do some (of course I root). I love gadgets and technology and am very knowledgeable, but this phone has been quite a lot of trouble. I love many things it does, but the QC of both hardware and software is definitely lacking.
 
I agree that Samsung should have done a lot more on QC for the phone, but I'm sick of seeing people saying they took back the Captivate and exchanged it for the iPhone or whatever other phone. We get it, the Captivate has some issues, but so does every phone. The iPhone has antenna issues, proximity sensor malfunctions, etc... The Evo 4G has issues with cracked power buttons. The Droid has a crappy keyboard. The Droid 2 seems insignificant next to the Droid X, expecially when they are equally priced. I'm just annoyed that several times I've seen people open threads talking about how they were excited for the Captivate until they came here and read the forum posts about how people were returning the phone. Well... look at the results of the poll. Overwhelmingly, the community here likes the Captivate. However, you still see more posts about complaining than praising, and the actual majority opinion is in no way represented. That's the reason I even started this thread, to expose and bring to light that majority.
 
Further thoughts on the Captivate
(actually I just love using it to post here)....:)

OK, Seriously, I've been a multi-platformist for over six years, working as a 3D Aerospace Design Engineer. What I see and experience on a weekly basis is the tendency of people to resist change, even if they like the idea. Working in Windows, OS X, Linux and Unix, there is a lot of resistance from new engineers who are required to learn the proprietary software.

My point is I've witnessed many people purchase an Android phone of any model only to return it within a few days. Not only did they cheat themselves out of a great new experience, but worse, they enter the forum act like experts and bash both Android and the phone.

Not to pick on anyone, but the truth as I see it, is iPhone users are the worst. However that's easy to explain. It's because iPhones are the easiest to use. I know I have an iPhone 4 amongs the other phones I use. The second reason this group consists of a lot of complainers is the culture of arrogance created by it's CEO.

Goin forward, I see Android continuing to build momentum and spur innovation like SWYPE, and other new technologies.
 
If your patient about waiting for what it's really worth, then this has got to be one of the best phones out right now. Even the exterior quality is better than Vibrant and is basically the same phone minus the USUPA (:mad:). At&t's network though is still pretty damn fast. Overall the best phone I ever had, definitely better than my old iphone.
 
I'm loving it. My fiance has a 3GS and keeps looking over at me as I do various things and makes comments on how awesome the screen looks. I've played with her iPhone and it just never really grabbed me. I came from WinMo for the past few years and I'm so glad I decided to try out Android.

I never use GPS so that hasn't become an issue for me yet. I don't seem to have an issue with it not waking up when I pull the phone away from my face. Sometimes it doesn't wake up immediately, but it's never been more than a second pause.

A few things I don't like so far:

1. The battery does seem to drain faster than my previous phones while doing the same activities even after doing multiple full drain and charges and running Juice Defender.

2. I absolutely HATE the placement of the power button. Not only is it difficult to push (I hit it but never seem to push it in enough or just catch the angled side too often) but when I try to push it or succeed to push it I'm always nailing the volume buttons along with it. ANNOYING!!

3. It's too thin... lol yeah I know, that's a good quality in some respects. But it's difficult to hold to play games on. My hand cramps and it tends to slide around or pop out of place as I hold it. I think my Touch HD was just a bit thicker and that seemed to work better. Maybe if I were to get a case or something that would help.

Even though those 3 annoy me to no end (especially that damn power button!!) I still love the phone.
 
I put yea, but problems annoy me. This is my first android phone. Yes, I wish the GPS worked and feel they will get it working, so that's not too much of an issue. And I really can't wait for Froyo and the speed to come along with it. But some other issues that annoy me (some are phone, some are OS):
-back light and sensitivity of the hard keys
-cut and paste isn't as great as my BB Curve was
-a little lag, but Froyo should fix this
-battery life: no where near my BB Curve
But overall, very pleased with the phone and more so with Android.
 
My choice was between a phone with a broken antenna, that the company denies is broken; or a phone with a broken GPS that the company has promised a fix for and given a timeline on a release.

I was fully prepared to buy the iPhone 4, but the Guy at the AT&T store told me that it was having a lot of problems, was still on back order, and that I should wait for this phone. I thought that it was only going to T-Mobile, and not all four carriers. The choice was pretty damn obvious, and I'm almost embarrassed I almost supported a company as underhanded, lying, and manipulating as Apple.
 
I own an iPhone 4 and a Samsung Captivate, they are both amazing. But yes, I do like my Captivate.

I have no problems with my iPhone and it's "broken" antenna and I really don't need GPS on my phone, though a fix is welcome.

to play devils advocate with the iphone theres a fix that makes it work, if you want to call having to use an case an fix. With the galaxy s phones there is no present work around

Not to mention the phone really works fine without a case and doesn't even need a fix. The antennagate thing is a crock of shit. In some situations it's an issue but for MOST people 99% of the time the antenna is fine.

Like I said I don't use a case and my phone works like it should, just like my Captivate works as a phone. My Captivate does not however work as a GPS, which is ok, but I'd still like a fix.

well i disagree there i do believe the antennae issue on iphone was real, but they have an "fix" for it with using an case. I am just hoping samsung didnt make same mistake with having an hardware issue being the culprit with the gps
 
I had one of the battery faulty ones, so with 6 days left in my return period, I returned it, and went to verizon and got a droid 2... but i do miss the screen and the 720p capturing...
 
Of course.

Its like a crazy, high maintenance and smoking hot girl friend. You still love her despite her flaws. Focus on the positives more so than the negatives. None of us are perfect, so are phones.
 
I love my captivate, everything is good except for the GPS. And once the screen would not respond, had to take the battery to reboot and then it worked just fine. Taking the battery out is a pain with the case I have on though.

I still got 10 days on my 30 day return policy tho, I was thinking about getting a new one just cause but then I'm kinda against the unethicalness of that. I'm just hoping Samsung pulls through, as is everyone, on the GPS because as a delivery driver is going to new places very often it is totally necessary.
 
I like my phone alot and have enjoyed playing with it for about a week..The only issues I am having are..I cannot seem to fiqure out why my computer will not recgonize my phone. I have downloaded new drivers and still it is not there. I also can not fiqure out how to move my music to the phone. I have a 4g sd card in the phone...plus how do you drop and drag?
 
I really do love this phone! Admittedly the GPS is worthless, which hopefully will be fixed soon and for me, personally, it is not something I will ever use. I also agree that the computer sync is a bit wonky, it works on mine after I plug and unplug it a few times. However, these issues aside, Samsung has built an amazing piece of technology. This phone has impressed me in every way possible and opened my eyes to realize how limited I actually was by my previous phone, which BTW was not without its technical issues.
 
Love my captivate. My gf got so tired of bein jealous of my phone that she returned her iphone and got a captivate as well and couldnt be happier.
Sure there are a few minor issues but all phones have em. And many of them are fixable w a lil tweaking.
Absolutely cant wait for froyo.

I use Easy Phone Tunes. I store all my music in iTunes on my computer and this very easy to configure. Find in the market free.
