I'm starting to feel, all day long now, that Arizona is becoming my past... eighteen awful years in an otherwise wonderful place. Just gotta figure out where my future is. Going to O'side in a couple weeks to see if it's there.

I want to thank everyone in this incredibly timed thread, especially Moody Blues, for helping me rearrange my brain...
:) You're very welcome. :)

I, for one, can't wait to see how everything plays out for you. I really don't think it matters WHERE you end up physically, I think what's important is the mental shift that's started.

Neither can I, but I believe I'm going there the week after this, so I'll at least know what I've been googling about... can't imagine how we used to research stuff like this before the internet.

Hmm... whist overgoogling, I find a page full of Oceanside gangs... not keen on moving into that sort of environment.

See the comments after: To Live and Die in Oceanside

You can find gangs and gang activity in many big cities, it's just how things are. DC, while I haven't heard much in a while, is home to quite a bit of MS13 among other Central/SA based gangs. I feel like they'd be the least of your troubles unless you get involved with them. ;)

Anyway, when you mentioned Oceanside, I just thought of The Decemberists song by the same title. :)

Like bread said, gangs can be found all over the place. I have to admit I'm pretty sheltered here where I live, and I really can't speak to gangs' presence, or lack thereof, in other areas. So if I were you, I'd head to Oceanside to check out that particular place you're interested in, have a good look around, and then have a frank discussion with the agent--AND neighbors, store owners, the police department, etc. Looking at statistics in black and white is one thing, actually talking to people who live and work in the vicinity is another.

'Zakly. From what little I've learned about it way over here, I've heard nothing but good things, so I still plan to go there next Monday and get a feel for it... not gonna call an agent or anyone in advance, not even motel reservations... just gonna see how things go and decide things later.

Dear ***,

Hi ***. I got your name from *** in *** AZ, who recommended you highly as a long-time friend. I plan to visit Oceanside Mon10/6-Thu10/9. The purpose is to evaluate changing my life by moving there. It's quite a story and I'd like to see you, or someone you recommend, at that time. If interested, please get back to me. Thanks in advance...

So maybe I'll have some sort of connection there...

Well, skip her, apparently. I've sent her MLS links of active MLS listings and she says there's nothing in those price ranges – even though the damn things are right there under her nose. At these low prices, I guess I'm pond scum to her, but at least she's going to try and find a scumster.

Looks like I'll be flying blind anyway...

Well, hang that as another 'things happen for a reason' incidents...

I wrote, "Apparently things are not as they seem here. That's okay, sorry to bother, but I've decided to think this over a bit longer. I appreciate your help!"

She replied, "I understand....I was forced to move from a rental near the ocean due
to water/mold. Would love to stay in the area but rental prices are rising faster
than home sales. Rentals are doing very well for owners now. Wish my news could have been better, believe me. Best to you."

Something about California, no offense, just spooks me. I may have to make a ten-hour drive to Carson City instead...

It's okay. Really. It's not me, or anyone, you need to please in this scenario--it's just you. What I want to see is you making a decision that's going to make you happy, and lead somewhere pleasant emotionally and, hopefully, physically as well. I still think CA is a viable option, even with its ridiculously high housing costs, because it's such a big and diverse state. But if that's not in the cards, fine. :)

Appreciate your kindness, Moody.

At this point, the pendulum has swung back to visiting O'side. From more googling, Carson City doesn't appear to offer much poker-wise, and what's the point of moving to Nevada other than to play poker? I think I just built the place up in my head... I'm good at that.

But I do know what O'side is, so tenuously hold that plan. It's also a lot closer.

Never mind. I kept reminding myself that I'm better off with bad memories than no memories at all, because the bad ones are mixed in with the good. I kept thinking back to this thread's title, 'Do you like where you live?', and the answer is actually yes. In fact, that's why I moved here. I just have to reconfigure my interpretation of it. So I've shelved Bullhead City, Carson City and Oceanside, until further notice, and am thinking of moving all the way across town.

But of course, I'll hear my ex on the radio again tomorrow...

Wait your ex is Rush Limbaugh?

(I was originally going to say Howard Stern, but I don't know if he is still on the radio)

I live in a rather large town (Bossier, LA) that has at least 3 or 4 of everything and 6 big casinos.

Where I come from (Union, SC), we're lucky to have 1 of some things, yes very small town.

I like it pretty decent here, but still not comfortable to call this place "home". Would I move back to my small town if I was in the position to? In a heart beat.

Isn't that where that awful woman, Susan Smith, killed her two little boys? :(

What brought you there in the first place? And what would it take to go back to the small town?

That's the very town yes, I'm surprised someone remembers.

I have some family here, wanted a change of scenery and haven't left for a year so far.

Lack of decent jobs there is the main reason from keeping me from going back.

This photo on the front page of today's LA Times reminded me of why I love it here! :D

That's a shot of the San Gabriel Mountains from the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. Obama is set to name some 350,000 acres of the San Gabriels as a national monument.

What I love is the juxtaposition of palm trees and snow or, more accurately, the weather climates they represent. I LOVE that I can be down here where it's warm, yet see snow up in the mountains--and even venture up there when there's snow...if I should ever be inclined to be that cold again...

The latest... Something about Bullhead City, Oceanside, Carson City and Reno seemed all wrong and I tried to figure out why. The best reasons I can come up with are:

(a) I'm could actually be getting tired of casinos, at least enough to shelve the idea of moving somewhere for them specifically, and

(b) I'm starting to wonder if, having lost our brother, our father, our niece, and recently our mother, maybe I should consider moving to Tennessee, where my sister's been for over thirty years... a state with no casinos at all.

But I also doubt that I could find a way to spend my time without cards in my hand. So I guess I'm right where I started.
