Root do you need to be rooted to get a different ROM?

i updated my phone to 2.2.2 and i cant root now. Can i get sense rom on my phone or do i have to be rooted?

To be able to install a custom rom you need access to the system files on your device. Without rooting, you do not have this access.

First you must have root access, and right now, the only way to do that is by downgrading back to 2.2.1. Try this. http://androidforums.com/lg-optimus-m/409145-downgrading-putting-stock-rom.html then try to flash the recovery, then flash the rom.
