Cool thing for Tasker is if you download it from their website, you have a trial period.
Test it out during the trial and see if it does what you want, or if you can get a solution from the community for Tasker in time.

Considering that Locale (which is what I used when it was free) is now $10, and it mainly just does changes based off your location, and Tasker is $6 and you can set it to do changes based off of a massive number of different triggers, I would say it is worth it However it has more worth for those who want to do more with their phone automatically. If it is just one thing you want done, it can be a harder sell.

I think it is around 6 or 10 days. Good amount of time for practice and testing.

I use "deskhome". It works fine but since its installed I cant tell what I paid for it. No more than one or two bucks though. You can either manually put it in dock mode or it will do it automatically when you plug the phone into the charger.

If you do not like the app or do not want to use it or cannot use it, whatever, go back to the app in the market, and use the market to uninstall it and you will not be charged.

I was able to make a custom icon using LauncherPro. I used DockSimulator before but it doesn't play nice with Froyo.

- Long press desktop or quickbar
- Click Shortcuts
- Click Activities (with LaucherPro Logo)
- Scroll down to "Desk Home" and expand
- Select the item ending in "DLauncher"
- Choose an icon image.

Now the alarm clock thingie activates when you click your custom icon just like you placed it in a desk charger dock.

* No dock to buy
* No app to buy (might work in free LauncherPro. i have paid version)
* No additional background service to run.

You may want to go out to YouTube. There are some fascinating and fun clips on how people have pulled together a few hardware items for pennies and made their own docks (car and media). If nothing else, many of the videos are entertaining. Ingenuity is a wonderful thing!
