Does 3G turn off when you're on Wi-Fi?

I ask because when I turn on Wi-Fi, my Mobile Network widget remains "on" (with the green bar indicating on), and "Mobile Network" in my Networks settings also remains checked.

However, if I view my settings through the app Quick Settings, turning Wi-Fi on turns off the "Mobile Data" option (which I assume is another name for 3G).

So is 3G off when Wi-Fi is on? Or is it still somehow on and using the battery/searching for signal?

Thanks.

I asked this same question a week ago and was told that when both are on it will use wifi over 3G, but 3G is still on and needs to be turned off in order to save battery life.

::sigh::

So I've heard:

1. it stays on
2. it goes off
3. it goes into standby (meaning what, exactly?)

That's a great question. The Mobile network is still checked under Menu, Settings, Wireless & networks settings when the notification changes to the WiFi wave icon so I would say it stays on. It's just indicating which network is being used to send/receive data and the faster one prevails.
