Help Does Android use hardware virtualization?

Polygone

Lurker
I have a question.
How exactly does the dalvik VM work in the Android operating system?

So all applications run inside the dalvik virtual machine. Even though Android is Linux, the only native Linux program that runs inside is dalvik itself.
Wouldn't that mean that in order for Android to work, any computer it ran on would have to have a processor
equipped with some form of the VT instruction set?

is this not the same thing as running an operating system inside a virtual machine on an x86 PC?
do ARM processors have a VT instruction set?
Sorry for the confusion. Please help me understand

@Polygone: You do realize that since Android 5.0 it no longer uses the Dalvik VM. It now uses Android RunTime aka ART. Dalvik is not even included in 5.0 or later as an option. This article gives a good explanation of the basics and differences between the two systems.

BTW what do you mean by "Even though Android is Linux, the only native Linux program that runs inside is dalvik itself."?

Edit: Doh! Triple n'jad!
