Does custom launcher = slower performance?

EDIT: Customer in the title should read custom.

My phone is the unlocked gsm version from the play store.

Part of what I love about my gnex is the pure android experience... but part of what I love about android is the customization...

So my gnex with 4.2 is currently smooth as butter. I experimented with GO launcher and noticed a terrible lag when unlocking the lock screen and moving across the home screens so I uninstalled. I figured Google worked hard to make this thing smooth as butter so maybe better not to mess with it.

But I really like some of the themes on Nova launcher. Should I expect it to slow down my phone?

I like using Apex Launcher Pro which also has the ability to use go launcher themes on top of it's own specialized themes. It also runs silky smooth on my GNex.

Go launcher is based of older launchers so it can be used on ALL phones.
Nova, and Apex (and a couple others) are based on JB or at least ICS launchers. so they tend to run just as smooth as the stock launcher. I personally have used both Apex and Nova and both are on par with the stock launcher.....however i have always felt Nova is a little smoother.
