Does Froyo have voice dial?

I haven't upgraded yet but one feature that would make me do it right away would be the ability to voice dial which I can't do with 2.1. Does Froyo have this feature? Any special app needed?

I should have been more specific. I was talking about the ability to voice dial while connected to a Bluetooth device. I have read that some phones running Froyo have this ability but nothing specific to the Captivate.

I.E. Once paired with a Bluetooth device you can activate the Bluetooth device and say something like, "Call home." and it will dial your home phone number.

It's hard to believe that with all the media attention that has been focused on the use of cell phones while driving that AT&T and Samsung did not implement BT voice dialing. Many new cars have BT as standard and the rest have it as an option so for phone manufacturers and carriers not to provide this is a travesty.

As I understand it other Froyo phones have this capability but it seems to be hit and miss depending upon the BT device.

All I know is when you search all the forums and related articles, they all mention that it isn't enabled in the Captivate's version of Froyo. Is it an AT&T phenomenon? Have to ask someone on Rogers, or other network.

Nothing Samsung does or, better yet, doesn't do should surprise anyone.

I attempted voice dialing when I was using stock Eclair and experienced unexplained lags. I'd look at the dialer and shout: DIAL, YOU S.O.B.!

My car has Sync so I could use voice commands before updating to Froyo. Works great.

Ok. It's the Ford BT system. I currently have a Hyundai Santa Fe. I'll be replacing it soon with another Santa Fe which now has BT as standard. I guess I'll have to see if my current Captivate 2.1 works with the Hyundai system or if it doesn't then upgrade to 2.2 if it does. Despite it being illegal in California my wife who drives this car most often does talk on her cell while driving and I can't get her to use the Motorola T505 I recently purchased.

I will probably also be getting a new Toyota Tacoma. Don't know if BT is standard or an option but I'll be checking to see if it works with either 2.1 or 2.2.

I don't care if either version doesn't allow you to voice dial directly from the phone. I can dial manually just fine.:)

I have a Rogers'..... No voice dial. Unfortunately this means my hubby will be getting an iPhone... He lives for voice dial.

He won't use bluetooth in any case...

Yeah, I have Sync.

With my old Motorola K1 they paired as soon as I turned the truck on -BT came on once the phone was in range, and went off when the signal was gone.

With the Captivate I have to manually turn BT on (and off, which I forget half the time (I just realized I did... again. Crap.)) and then pair them up manually. An inconvenience to the point were I generally don't even use Sync any more - unless I'm on post where only hands-free is allowed..

(Unless I'm missing a setting where BT will come on when its near a paired device???)

Sync is great for while in an equipped vehicle, but doesn't address voice dialing otherwise.

I dont know if it called voice dial or not, but if I do one long press of the magnifying glass/search key on the bottom right from any screen, I can say "call blah blah blah" and it does it. I always start with "call", then a name, and end with mobile, home, work, etc. Its never failed me.

Also, this has been tremendously helpful. Using the same long press, and say "call" then say a local business, one that is not in your phone, followed by the city and state. For the most part, it works great. Sometimes it cant, but will pop up a list of options/search results.

So, it does take one key press to do it, but its simple, and can be done from any screen. Hope this helps some of you!

I tired that, but it doesn't see anyone in my contact list. However, I can call Cassie's Pizza... wherever that is (not in Alabama where I am).

Oh, and 3G (Wifi) has to be enabled or I get a "Connection Lost" notification.

What I know about Froyo 2.2 on Captivate and handsfree bluetooth
Best Regards, Don

I installed Froyo 2.2 on Thursday 2/24/11. Flash works, the GPS now works (finallly), but bluetooth dialing still does not work properly. When I push the button on my bluetooth headset, the phone wakes up and I hear "say a command" in the headset, however the phone is deaf and does not hear anything I say. I tried this with two different bluetooth headsets, a Samsung SBH170, and a Samsung WEP450.

Copy of my online chat from yesterday with Samsung follows below.
If they are correct, then the answer is that Bluetooth hands free does not work properly with 2.2 and that I need to wait for a future update...
I should also mention that my daughter uses bluetooth handsfree on her Motorola Droid X just fine, but that is with Verizon and with 2.2.1 and not just 2.2

So the quest becomes, ...when do we get 2.2.1 for Captivate?

I don't know if this will help, but I found an application in my 'Samsung Apps' called 'Vlingo Tap and Speak' that does the following:

Click on the application first, click TAP AND SPEAK and then speak into the phone and then DONE.

Call XXXXX Mobile (and it dials their mobile number from your contact list) If you say Call XXXX Home, it dials their home number. If you only have one number for them, you need only to say Call XXXX If you do not say which number you want, a list pops up and you choose from that.

Text XXXX Mobile (same as above) and then you speak into the phone what you want to text and you can confirm it is correct before you send.

Navigate to XYZ business and your GPS will pop up and there you go. If there is more than 1 XYZ business nearby, a list will pop up and you can choose.

Go to XYZ and you get a google search result for XYZ

You can also 'update facebook status' by merely saying that, plus what you want to say and apparently it 'learns' as you go.

it is simply amazing and FREE at the Samsung Apps on my Captivate (Rogers)

Having found this, I may avoid my Husband wanting an iPhone.

Oh no really? This is a first that Canada gets something cool before you guys do.

I just watched some youtubes on it, with a guy using bluetooth... it is amazing!!

I hope you guys get it soon, because that would solve every issue with voice/BT/handsfree.
