Does GOOGLE TALK use text message minutes?

This is a two part question...

1st off...does using Google Talk use up text messages when sending and receiving?

2nd...suppose someone turned up their data to use while out of the country...if they use Google Talk to communicate to other Talk contacts...would there be extra charges associated?

Thanks!

Google Talk just uses data and does not use text messages.

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking with the 2nd question.

1st off, Google talk is not SMS (aka text messages) it is an IM client - completely (sorta) different thing. So, no, it does not use SMS minutes at all.

With Google Voice you can text without using a text plan, at no charge...

A good alternative to using your SMS quota from your service provider.

If you turn off data, you can't use google talk.

Not through 3G anyway. However,

I'd say it will work for free when you are under a WIFI accessible area.

Correct. All Internet-usable apps will still work if you disconnect your data and still go to sites that you can access WiFi. No phone service, however...since the CDMA is US (and a couple of other countries, IIRC) specific.

See this thread for more info.

everyone is correct with google talk using data. OP is probably wondering because on older dumbphones AIM and other message clients used to use text. Nowadays its over data.

for your second questions, since it is over data, you won't be charged extra. I just got back from asia and turned on international data. I used gtalk all day with no extra charges.
**edit, turned on unlimited international data. normal international data would charge by the kb.

i also used google voice for texts also for no charges as an fyi, but i kno OP didn't ask that question.

Now, if we can get some Gingerbread on that Droid, maybe we could also make SIP VOIP calls without any 3G data over WIFI ... Of course if Verizon let us do it.

I already am able to do this, using Google Voice, Gizmo5, GV Callback app, and SIPDroid app for Android.

No extra charge on number 2 question aside from your data plan fees. If you go to wifi free area then it will be totally free.
