Help Does HTC Sync require the Windows Shell to work?

Hi,
Does HTC Sync require the Windows Shell to display the interface properly?

I have Win XP SP2, with bblean

I found the windows shell to be too inflexible, sluggish & buggy, so swapped it years ago. very occasionally I find some apps don't work properly.

I hope that HTC haven't made the noob error of having windows shell dependencies.
