I turn off my wi-fi when leaving the house so the phone won't search for a signal thinking this might preserve battery power. Should I even bother?

I did that as well as my sprint signal was horrible and my phone would constantly try to connect to wifi. It helped a lot in my case.

It saves my battery while I'm at work. I constantly walk in and out of two wifi networks.

Yes, you should bother. This phone is notorious for horrible battery life.
