I find myself conflicted on OS updates... I really want to see Motorola roll out OS updates as quick as possible, and I think its important to the overall android effort. But I find myself not caring as much now that certain things are in the play store. Like the phone and assistant.

Don't get me wrong I really like new and shinny things, and I have always felt that the updates took way too long if they came at all on a lot of devices. With the move of a lot of the core features to the play store it is less import to me now.... Its more of a pride point of getting the latest and greatest....

I do see a few things that would be nice like the integrated search in the dialer and the new immersive mode to hide the menu icons but what bugs will this bring. The phone (at least for me) is working flawlessly... Do I want to chance that on a number upgrade?

Thoughts?

Does Kit Kat matter to me? Yes, because if they said the Moto X was not getting Kit Kat then it would bother me.

That being said, am I wanting the update the day they announce it? Not really. Like you said, the phone works great right now. But I will gladly accept the update when it rolls around. I think the time we wait for it to arrive will make it pretty bug free.

In the past, Google has not let me down in terms of updating their OS. So I don't see that changing. But, I know people out there, like what they are use to, and I would understand "why update to something that's not broken".

This will probably be the last major update I see on this phone before I change phones. Kit Kat is the OS I want to be familiar with.

Kit Kat is definitely a MAJOR upgrade with Google continuing to integrate it's own stuff into android (i.e. hangouts); so I would think it matters to everyone using an android device

I always want the new updates, mainly due to the newer APIs and then features.

The storage access framework additions and SMS provider, look pretty neat. For that matter, I was really looking forward to 4.3, for the notification APIs, but the dev for Sliding Messaging seems to have already addressed it.

I also want native translucent bars.:p

I can't say I've cared much about anything Google has done with the stock rom since they added Google Now in 4.1. They seem to care more about animations and turning G+ into a photo editor than addressing the shortcomings of the phone side of things on Android. I was kind of hoping the features of the Moto X (esp the do not disturb mode) would make its way into KitKat and/or the Nexus 5, but since they didn't. I'm getting a Moto X :P
