Just got back from Verizon store that I wrote about a short while ago...clerk said they'd never heard of the call voice issue (all of a sudden sounding underwater, garbly). They went and called tech support and let us talk to them and, lo and behold, he had never heard of this issue with this phone. REALLY???? For now, anytime a call goes sour, dial in ### to make a record of it and after several entries they may be able to zero in on the problem. I cannot believe after reading the problems some of us have had that Verizon tech support says they are not aware of an issue with the Spectrum and voice quality suddenly going bad. Hmmmmm....

If you're in the new "can change" period switch devices to galaxy nexus or better yet razr max hd imho.
However, each to his own choice and decision.

I have had issues with call quality will all 4 of the LG Spectrums I have experienced. I have had 2 of my own and both of my sons have the same phone with the same problem. The person I am talking to struggles to hear me and I have never had that problem with a cell phone in my life so it is definitely the phone design. I can hold the mic up to my mouth and fix the problem but then I cant hear because my ear is away from the phone. I am sure as the world that it is the mic position on the phone, but that is not my concern, these phones are gone. I love many things about the phone but if a phone cant be a phone then we should name it something else. :-) I need the phone feature more than my boys but nothing is more frustrating than poor call quality.

Thanks, i've long held the same opinion its primarily a phone, if that's not done right I couldn't care how nice the screen is. I've mitigated the call quality by mostly having a blue tooth nearby for longer calls and bringing the mic closer to mouth for calls without blue tooth though its a juggling act.

The issue is primarily the size of the phone, I believe Steve jobs said that was why the iPhone was only 3.5" because that places the microphone at an optimum position for the majority of users based off the distance from putting the speaker directly over the opening to the ear canal.

If you push the spectrum into your face (such that it will leave a lovely imprint) you should lessen the number of times people tell you they are having a hard time hearing you.

It is a concern I have with 5" phones, I have never had a Bluetooth device where someone (or everyone) didn't complain about poor audio from my headset. So I stopped using them. If the Mic is not placed on the front of the phone, a 5" device will only magnify this issue.

This really makes the most sense. The phone comes equal to where my mouth is, but since sound moves away from the mic, not at a 90 degree angle to the mic, it can't really hear me, unless I cup the bottom of the phone. It's one of the pitfalls of these larger phones, IMO, but if you don't talk on the phone much, like me, it's not that big of a deal.

I have the Ballistic case on my phone and the rubber around it almost directs the mike away from your mouth, there needs to be a case that sort of cups the mike towards you.

My gf and I both got spectrums and it sounded very muffled. We both have the soft cases. I ended up carefully cutting a opening from the bottom of the case to the mic opening on both of our cases and it is crystal clear for us now.

Well, for someone to say it's a 'user' or 'coverage' error is leaving out the possible realm of a lousy production run of mic chipsets that were put in at the factory. We got replacement Spectrums, refurbished (you can't get 'new' replacement phones through Verizon unless you pay for them...GRRRRRRRRR)...and to no surprise within only days were getting the same issues PLUS one of the phones would go 'blackscreen' in the middle of a call or operation and while 'on' would not respond to any buttons or charging cord input. The way I look at it, if a phone is refurbished, it had issues....and it escaped quality control the first time around, and it could well do it the second time around.

I'm sure some refurbs are great after reconditioning, but we were fuming at what we received from Verizon. It was unacceptable on every level. For those just picking up this post, I'd be in the middle of a call with someone, both of us sitting still in strong 4G areas...I'll be talking and heard perfectly fine, and all of a sudden I was asked to repeat what I just said as it sounded like I was underwater. My breaking point with new refurb phone was calling in an automated prescription refill...nurse called me back 10 minutes later and said she couldn't understand most of what I said. 'Nuf said...I'm done with the Spectrum since they refuse to give me a new one as a replacement, which I would have willingly accepted.

In the mail are HTC Rezound refurbished phones heading our way...still irks me I can't get a 'new out of the box' replacement for a phone we paid a helluva lot of money for, but that's part of their business model. If you have a great Spectrum, congratulations. I loved ALMOST everything else about it. :-)

I've noticed that the call quality is significantly worse when calling between networks (e.g. Verizon to ATT). I know because my family (who were previously on ATT) recently switched to Verizon, and they have said all calls from both my wife and me are much improved. Previously, they complained about the whole muffled voice thing.
