Rooting in and of itself (i.e., installing the root binaries) doesn't typically impact the operation of your device.

Installing root can sometimes mean taking extraordinary actions that may indeed require that you do things that could impact and alter your device (this varies by device, though), so you need to carefully weigh and assess whether rooting is right for you. You should understand the ramifications and consequences of rooting before attempting to undertake the effort to do so (many don't and later regret it).
