Root Does rooting fix 4g crashing problem?

are you in a strong 4g Area? if youre on the outskirts it could simply be that youre not getting enuff signal to use it.

i keep 4g off most of the time, but the tests ive done leaving it on for extended periods ive not had any issues(that werent RIL in the rom related) with it staying connected.

has your phone updated to 1.70.605.0 firmware? gps lock and data signal/lock should be better now than ever if it has. i ran this firmware all day and 4g stayed on until i left my the area. it handed to 3g and back to 4g when i returned without issue.

so the answer to your questions is,i guess: it depends on why 4g is "crashing"

Yes, I stupidly let the update go thru, so now I have 1.70.605.0 firmware and will have to wait for them to figure out how to root this, but I wanted to know if there was light at the end of the tunnel. That is, is it a hardware or a software problem.

I usually have 2 -3 bars of 4G. LTE ON/OFF shows I have a signal strength of -85 db (*/- 5db) and 2 (or 3) asu which I guess is not that great, but would seem to be enough.

Do you think the signal strength could be causing it?

your firmware is still rootable with current methods. use the guide on xda,and you can either:
1)follow as is,and flash a rom immediately after(custom or a rooted mr2)
2) do not use the "upgrade ruu" that comes with the guide. use the one from this thread instead: http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/389462-custom-mr2-upgrade-ruu-new-rooters.html it is mr2,and you wont have to flash anything extra to be on rooted current firmware.

you might also hold out a few days, and see if a new method comes up as discussed here: http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/391327-new-root-business.html

what i know about signal strength:
1)the bars are meaningless
2) 85 db is cdma phone signal strength, nothing to do with data

it could be a weak siginal,it could be software related,or it(less likely) could be hardware. sorry for the vaugeness theres just not an easy answer to why its happening. as i said,i had great luck on the 1.70.605.0 firmware.

Hey, that's great news. I thought 1.70.605.0 was the upgraded version that could not be rooted. Almost all the posts just refer to the upgrade without specifying the version that cannot be rooted.

I just got the TB on July 7th (to get unlimited data) as a supplement to my Sprint EVO 4G which I consider my main phone. so i have nothing of value on the TB yet so I do not need a rooting method that preserves them.

As for signal strength, I did not know that the bars or the reading within the
LTE ON/Off program showed the results for CDMA when I had a 4G connection.

Is there a way to get the 4G signal strength? I am west of Boston right next to Rt 128 (25 yards) but I am in a brick building.

Welcome, are you going to drop Spring and come over to VZW or are you just running with the EVO and bolt?

If you root you can choose to use an updated radio that is supposed to be from the GB OTA leak (which hasn't surfaced that I'm aware of) it may provide better 4G for you.

I would never drop Sprint. I just got VZW as a fall back in case Sprint goes belly up due to the ATT - T-Mobile merger (which hopefully will not happen).

That said, I would still like my VZW phone to work. the problem seems widespread enough that it would seem like the problem should have been identified by now even if a solution i snot yet available.

I personally think you are planning on something that won't happen, with Sprint being the last of the "unlimited" carriers they will ride that train as long as they can.

Sorry I can't be of more help to you, I will do some searching around see if I can find anything further.

I really hope you are right. I really like Sprint. But with this economy, who knows?

I was happy to learn I can still root.

If it turns out to be a hardware problem, I have the equipment insurance and presumably the HTC warranty as well.

If it's software and they develop a fix, I will have to decide whether to upgrade or not.

That's what I was doing. (Using LTE On/Off to ping Google (Sorry, Google)). I thought the signal reading I got should have been for 4G (when LTE showed I had a 4G connection).

What I don't know is what signal strength could cause it to crash entirely and not switch me to 3G. also, why can't I easily re-establish the connectin when the signal strength goes back up. Why do I have to power off and reboot?

That is an issue with the software I believe. When I first got the bolt in order to switch any of the network select settings you had to reboot for them to work (really annoying) The leaked GB radio that is available is a little better with the handoff between 3g and 4g if you are willing to root and explorer. I would suggest if you root to stick with Sense if 4g is important to you, the RIL for AOSP roms has not been entirely worked out and they can get wonky.

I will probably root. I just have to have the time to read all the directions which unfortunately have acronyms or terms with which I am not familiar and I need to understand them before I risk bricking my phone.

I have installed modified firmware before but not on ones where someone has decreed that thou shalt not do that.

Feel free to ask any questions you have. I forget how the jargon can be offputting to those who are not already in the know about rooting.

Thanks for the offer. there's a sticky at the top of this sub-forum that a lot of acronyms and terms. Most are self-explanatory and experienced rooters know them, like ADB so I understand why they are not spelled out in the instructions. I just need to plug those into the rooting instructions and I think I will be good to go.

fwiw, I got my phone a couple of days before you, and it worked fine until the update. After that, I had a bunch of problems, including the 4g going down and not having ANY service (even though the BB I have for work was perfectly happy in 3G the whole time) for up to 15 minutes at a time. I rooted last night and so far so good. I was a complete newbie, but the guides (in the stickies) are wonderful and I was able to find answers to all my questions either in there or by doing a search of the forums. It took a little bit of reading and learning, but it really isn't hard, and I had a lot of fun doing it. I think I'll be doing a lot more playing around in the near future... :D
