Does speech recognition need wi-fi?

I have a new 16gb Tab 2 7.0. Speech recognition is great but seems to need an internet connection to work. Is this really the case or am I missing something?

Speech recognition is translated via Google's servers, so yes and internet connection is required. For now....

I just installed Speaktoit Assistant recently and noticed if I'm not online, it doesn't work. I wasn't sure if it had to be or not.

Thanks for that! Disappointing because I am not sure I like Google knowing what I type in my documents.
Is there a speech recognition app that does not need internet connection?
