Thin wool gloves don't keep your hands very warrm though. I wonder if the old USAF system of wool gloves under leather covers would work?

An old trick is a bag worn over the shoulder, with the bag under the armpit. Fabric thin enough that the phone is at about body temperature. (Worn under any cold-weather gear - coats, parkas, etc. - if course). You'll feel it ring, and you can arrange your clothing so it's easy to get to, but the battery will be working at a good temperature (for the battery).
I'm also thinking about going to Stockholm for New Years. I live in Turku (southwest coast of Finland) so I can just go from Turku to Stockholm on a ship.
Where I'm off to next month I appear to be looking forward to regular temperatures of -15
Ouch. It was 9 below (f) last night where I live and it felt like my lungs were on fire. 24 inches of snow in Massachusetts near northern coastline. Phone worked better than I did. Gear was fine too.
