Does Tethering work?

Guys (and/or Gals),

Make sure that your WiFi is turned off on your handset when testing your tether connection. Otherwise, the phone will simply relay its wifi connection to your computer, not a 3g cellular data connection.

When I try to tether using the "out of the box" instructions, I only get a connection if my phone is connected to WiFi. When I turn the WiFi off, i get:

"Error Code 67. Registration Failure. Press [OK] for options. Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again."

I think this has something to do with Sprint blocking tethering. Still looking for a non-PDAnet workaround. Let me know if you find anything.
 
You're right, it was only relaying my wifi signal :( I'm going to have to find another way.

And I think the only way around it is root.
 
agreed. this same issue was on the touch Pro2 but by going into the registry i have removed that reg entry to stop this from happening.

Ok guys, I just got off a 90 min phone call with Sprint (yes I did eat dinner while I was waiting :P ) troubleshooting this issue. They took me to the top tier CS who told me that it is the major known issue that they know of. HTC and Sprint are definitely aware of it and they expect it to be fixed in the next update.

So there we have it. Would someone please root the phone so that we can fix our own problems? :)

That is what I understand.

Although, it does seem that you can tether if you have Wifi available.:p:p Which is practically useless, unless your computer doesn't have Wifi.. A $450 wifi card. ehm...

1. Go to HTC's website and install the latest version of HTC Sync or install it off the memory card. (If your memory card isnt mounting properly make sure that you go into your notifications and select the USB symbol, and "Mount" your memory card.

2. Set your phone in Settings > Wireless Controls > Mobile Network Sharing.
Make sure this is checked. (You may also need to set your Hero to Debugging mode, do this by going to Settings > Applications > Development > Check USB debugging.

3. When you do the above step, windows should find your device and ask you to install drivers for an "Android phone". Sprint or HTC doesn't tell you that these drivers were installed with the HTC sync software. They should be located by default in your C:\program files\htc\htc drivers directory. Point the driver to this directory and install them. Check your device manager, you should see a network adapter named Android NDIS adapter or something to that effect.

4. Unplug your existing network connection from your computer and/or disable its wireless connection and windows should establish a network connection on its own.

I have verified this to work on windows vista home with the latest service packs installed. I will try it on Windows 7 Ultimate when I get home later.

I did the exact same thing last night and it worked for me too!
 
Tethering is not an issue with Sprint. I was tethering through Sprint's CDMA network on my Palm Pre with an app called MyTether for several months now. App worked great but did require rooting.

Hopefully someone can come up with a technique with step by step instructions and possibly a homebrew app that will do the job.

Do you mean a free app? Because PDANet works for this very thing without rooting. It just costs if you want more than just a trial.
 
that's weird. i'm tethering right now. just to triple-check, i turned off the wifi on my laptop, made sure it's unchecked on my hero, and even went so far as to unplug my router. yet i'm posting this using the hero as a modem. i don't know if it's because i have an employee plan in which phone as modem is included, or what, but i can definitely tether from my hero.

i did it the same way as above. just installed htc sync and the corrrect drivers were all installed.

Is PAM included in your plan? If it is, thats why. For the rest of us, it gives us failed authentication errors. Bad ID/Password .
 
Never once, did I get it to "just work". Fail after fail. I'll check this again later. Im just too tired to get up to get my phone at this point. Who knows. Maybe Sprint changed something on their end.
 
I want to address a few issues here.

1. PDANet doesn't support bluetooth tethering but only because Android doesn't expose bluetooth APIs, so there's nothing they can do (that's the reason they gave me when I contacted them).

2. PDANet disconnects quite frequently for me. I don't think it's the phone because I get consistent signal during those times. Perhaps a bug somewhere.

3. I think whether your mobile network sharing works or not is a matter of chance and time. For example, it doesn't work for me - prompts for username/pw. I don't have PAM on my account. However with my previous phone (Samsung A900), at one point I forgot to turn on the NAI hack (that disables telling Sprint what kind of modem is being used to access the web). It worked for about a week but then refused to go online anymore. At that point I remembered about the NAI hack and disabled NAI. Then it worked fine but I think it left my account in a "marked" state, so Hero doesn't want to work because of that flag. PDANet is kind of a way to get around that modem identification, which is why it works.

thanks for the link. i havent been to xda in a few days so i would have been late hearing this great news. i am tethered right now and its working great. i used the first method. first time didnt work 2 seconds later i tried again and it has been working find for the past 20 min. the good news is that the phone appears to be charging when connected unlike my symbian phone.

I suspect Sprint "fixed" this so it doesn't work anymore. They have officially stated there is no tether option for the "everything" plans.

I have got the "trick" quoted to work ONE time only after countless attempts. I got it to work even with the HTC sync software installed on my windows vista (64) laptop. It had great broadband while it lasted (the connection stopped after I received a call).

Now I notice the enable mobile connection (even if I am fast to start the Mobile network sharing that if the connection detects sharing it removes the mobile networking signal and sometimes goes into a "standby" mode.

As others have stated I get the sprint pcs vision failed password thing many times also.
 
@hiway..you got me worried that it no longer worked again so i got out of bed hooked my hero to my laptop and i am tethered to it now. somebody pointed out a trick that works pretty much the first time. once everything is turned off try open browser and try to go to a page. a dialogue with the setting tab opens up. click on it and then quickly tick boht boxes. works for me the first attempt each time. Now please no more crying wolf so i can go back to sleep :D
 
Yeah I've researched this pretty thoroughly and even tried that "trick" to no avail. I even uninstalled HTC sync with the same results. I think it might be related to some updates to towers in my area (Dallas/Ft. Worth). They have been updating many to 4g. I don't know, but it seems where I am at it isn't working anymore for some reason.
